The population is getting older and the number of people with cataracts is growing. It is vital we keep improving implant eye lenses and anti-cataract remedies.
Our work will help restore people's vision. We want to reduce the demand for cataract surgery by testing new drugs and developing new implant designs.
How our outstanding facilities and renowned researchers combat sight loss
We are looking at the optics and biomechanics of the eye lens. Using cutting-edge techniques and computational modelling, we are learning more about how the lens changes shape to focus and how new anti-cataract therapies can affect it.
The expertise behind the project
With her expertise in optics, biophysics and protein chemistry, Professor Barbara Pierscionek leads the team. We collaborate with researchers from:
- The University of Cardiff
- The University of Kingston
- The University of Washington
- The University of Texas at Arlington
- Wroclaw University of Technology
We have received generous grants from Fight for Sight, The Royal Society, the Japanese government and Zeiss.
This research falls under the theme of Health and Wellbeing.
