Career overview

Stuart is an academic and town planner working to understand how we can create better places to live and work. His expertise includes basic and applied research, policy development, and development control. He spent the first five years of his career as a development control planner and researcher, and since 2015 he has primarily worked as an academic, first in South Africa and now in the UK.

He has researched various topics, including development control, housing, spatial planning for mining towns, planning practice and education, and has over 30 published academic works, including two edited books. He has been involved in policy and research projects as principal, co-investigator, consultant or sub-consultant and has been involved in a number of high-level policy projects.

He has taught various topics, including research methodology, applied spatial planning, environmental planning, economics for planners, and property development, amongst others. He was previously Program Director for a postgraduate degree in Urban and Regional Planning at the University of the Free State, and is the current Course Leader for the BSc Property Development and Planning.
