Role

Dan King joined NTU in January 2017 as Director of Partnerships, Local Engagement and Commercial Services (PLECS) in order to establish this new professional services department.

PLECS focuses on:

  • Developing and enhancing partnerships with employers (large and small businesses, government, local authority, not-for-profit) to facilitate engagement with the breadth of the University’s capability, from graduate talent through to research.
  • Supporting local economic engagement and partnership with key stakeholders in Nottingham, D2N2 and the wider Midlands.
  • Developing commercial services for external organisations, building on the University’s academic expertise and facilities.

Career overview

Prior to joining NTU, Dan held a number of roles at the University of Nottingham where he led teams supporting research, business engagement, knowledge exchange and strategy across the University.  Roles included Acting Director for Research Enterprise and Graduate Services (2016/17) and Head of Business and Local Partnerships (2011-2016).

Other roles held during this time include Directorship of the University of Nottingham Innovation Park management company, advisory input into the local governance committees for the 2007-2014 ERDF programme and 2014-2020 ESIF programmes. He was also a member of the advisory panel for two RGF business grant schemes. Prior to 2001, Dan worked in research business development at the University of Warwick and in research funding administration with the Engineering & Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). He holds a PhD in Civil Engineering (University of Nottingham) and post-doctoral research experience in the monitoring of coastal defences (University of Brighton).
