Don manages the operations of the Language Centre, teaches on some modules of the Masters in English Language Teaching / Masters in TESOL, and supervises some PhD students.
He trained originally as a social anthropologist and has a PhD in that subject from the University of Cambridge based on research in East Africa. Since the late 1980s he has been involved in English language teaching. He has taught in Spain as well as the UK where he has worked in secondary, adult and higher education. He has previously worked at Coventry and Middlesex universities and came to NTU in 2004 to teach English for Academic Purposes. He became Academic Team Leader in 2007 and Head of Department in 2016.
PhD students have been supervised mainly in the areas of EFL writing skills and strategies.
