Mirella Santamaria MBE teaches Spanish on the University Language Programme and on the Ab-initio Accelerated Spanish course for beginners.

Mirella has a keen interest in Widening Participation in Languages, and has dedicated many years to working with school pupils in the region promoting the uptake of languages from G.C.S.E level through to University. In 2012, she was awarded an MBE for Services to Higher Education and Language Learning in recognition of her work.

In addition to her academic duties, Mirella is the Project Manager of Routes into Languages East Midlands, a HEFCE funded project which aims to increase the number of school pupils and undergraduates studying Languages.

Career overview

Mirella began her teaching career in Spain, teaching EFL. Before coming to NTU she taught Spanish and EFL at several FE colleges in the area.

External activity

Mirella is External Examiner for Spanish at Loughborough University.

Sponsors and collaborators

Mirella works closely with the EU Commission (London), the French Embassy (London) and the German Embassy (London). In 2014, she gained funding from the Goethe Institute (London) to support a Primary German Language and Culture After School Club.
