Role

Dr Harradine is a Principal Lecturer in Public Service finance. Dr Harradine is currently the joint head of the Health and Social Care Finance Research Unit with Professor Malcolm Prowle. The aim of the Unit is to provide a commentary and add to current knowledge in the areas of health and social care. This involves research and consultancy projects in and for public service organisations particularly in the UK.

Currently Donald teaches on a range of programmes primarily post graduate in the areas of: public sector financial strategy; general strategy; management accounting in public sector organisations; research methods. He currently has doctoral students, both international and UK based, studying issues in accounting, healthcare management and governance.

He is also the research co-ordinator for the Division of Accounting and Finance.

Career overview

Donald has fourteen years experience of working in the finance discipline within public service organisations. He has worked at strategic level within three major healthcare organisations, his last role that of director of finance for a large acute hospital in the East Midlands.

Research areas

My main areas of research are as follows:

  • Management accounting
  • Behavioural aspects of budgeting, particularly in a healthcare environment
  • Framing and identity in the context of healthcare management
  • The use of negotiated order in the context of financial control systems
  • Corporate governance in the context of NHS organisations
  • Third sector issues concerning the development and commissioning of services of services.

I am currently working on issues associated with the use of A&E services by millennials and the alternatives available.

External activity

  • Member of the editorial and management board of Journal of Finance and Management in Public Services.
  • Advising local authorities and NHS organisations on finance operational/strategic issues.
