Giovanna undertook a Masters degree in Computer Science in Mexico. Following this, she worked for three years (2007-2010) as a Software Developer at a Mexican company (Softtek). She is currently undertaking a PhD in Computer Science at NTU, alongside her teaching responsibilities.
Giovanna's area of research is wind power forecasting and the characterisation of wind power ramp events. The aim of this research is to provide wind power forecasts that could help the electric grid operators take better decisions when deciding who will provide the demanded energy and how much backup units need to be allocated to avoid any imbalances in the grid. Ramp events are of special interest as rapid changes in wind power (increases or decreases) that are not well forecasted can cause instability in the grid. Giovanna developed a forecasting tool that uses genetic programming to model the relationship between wind speed predictions obtained via numerical weather prediction models and the power output of a wind farm. The characterisation of the ramp events is done using a fuzzy logic approach as a way to avoid the binary classification of such events. As part of her PhD studies, Giovanna has published four conference papers and one journal paper.

Since 2011 Giovanna has been involved in the organisation of FAIRS, an all-day event for PhD students in the area of Artificial Intelligence, as part of the main AI Conference held in Cambridge every year. The Conference is organised by the BCS (The Chartered Institute for IT).
