Senior Lecturer in Electrical (Power) Engineering

I am an Assistant Professor (UK Senior Lecturer) in the Department of Engineering at Nottingham Trent University (NTU). Before joining NTU, I had several industrial and academic positions including leading research roles at Newcastle University (EPSRC National Centre for Energy Systems Integration on EPSRC ABC Research Project and EU H2020 inteGRIDy project) and Niroo Research Institute. I was also an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering, Shahid Beheshti University. I obtained a PhD degree in electrical engineering from Iran University of Science and Technology and was a postdoctoral researcher at the School of Engineering of Newcastle University. I am a power and energy systems researcher with more than 18 years of experience and have worked with international researchers on various interdisciplinary problems in power and energy systems, economics, operation research, and control theory. I have served as a Supervisor/Advisor of 80+ thesis-based students in Electrical Power Engineering. My research interest is the Integration of Sustainable Energy Systems. I have worked on smart grids/microgrids operation and control and what I have been most interested in over the last years is the application of advanced optimization and machine learning algorithms in these studies. Today, I work with a focus on the whole system approach to energy and work on a broader research portfolio with the aim of clean energy systems integration into the power systems, by considering flexibility and uncertainty as key elements.

My colleagues and I work together to empower the Earth by reducing the carbon emissions from the energy sector to make a sustainable future for all.

I always look for excellent PhD students interested in power and energy systems modelling, operation and control. Depending on the interest and background of candidates, research will include topics from power and energy systems studies based on advanced optimization and machine learning approaches.

Candidate profile:

  • strong background in Power and Energy Systems, Control, Computer Science, or closely related fields;
  • solid programming skills in Matlab/Python/Julia and experience of working with a power systems simulation software;
  • should have completed, or about to complete, a Bachelor's or Master's degree in the above-mentioned areas.

My research interests are:

  • Smart Grids, Microgrids, and Nanogrids;

I have worked on the aforementioned subjects for the past 18 years and what I have been most interested in is the application of advanced optimization and machine learning algorithms in these studies.
