Associate Professor of Smart Power & Energy Systems
I am an Associate Professor of Power and Energy Systems and Director of NTU-GridLab in the Department of Engineering at Nottingham Trent University (NTU), Nottingham, UK. I am also a Research Impact Champion for Engineering and Computer Sciences at the School of Science and Technology and a member of the NTU Research Impact Strategic Oversight Workstream. Before joining NTU, I had several industrial, academic, and leadership positions including leading research roles at Newcastle University (EPSRC National Centre for Energy Systems Integration, EPSRC Active Building Centre and EU H2020 inteGRIDy project), Shahid Beheshti University, and Niroo (Electric Power) Research Institute. I am a researcher and academic with two decades of experience and a committed volunteer for professional societies. My research interest is in the development of sustainable power and energy systems with a focus on the development of innovative solutions to empower people and local communities. I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and Editor-in-Chief of Springer Smart Grids and Sustainable Energy, an Editor of IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications, and a Subject Editor of IET Smart Grid and IET Generation, Transmission, and Distribution.
I passionately works on Sustainable Power and Energy Systems with a focus on the development of innovative solutions to empower people and local communities in the transition to a net-zero future and to tackle energy poverty worldwide.

Open Research Positions
I always look for excellent PhD students interested in power and energy systems modelling, operation and control. Depending on the interest and background of candidates, research will include topics from power and energy systems studies based on advanced optimization and machine learning approaches.
Candidate profile:
- strong background in Power and Energy Systems, Control, Computer Science, or closely related fields;
- solid programming skills in Matlab/Python/Julia and experience of working with power systems simulation software;
- should have completed, or are about to complete, a Bachelor's or Master's degree in the above-mentioned areas.

My research interests are:
- Local Energy Communities
- Smart Grids, Microgrids, and Nanogrids;
- Integration of Sustainable (Renewable) Distributed Energy Systems;
- Power and Energy Systems Modelling, Operation and Planning;
- Energy Markets and Transactive Energy;
- Energy Systems Integration.
I have worked on the aforementioned subjects for the past two decades and what I have been most interested in is the application of advanced optimization and machine learning algorithms in these studies.
Today, I work with a focus on the whole system approach to energy and work on a broader research portfolio with the aim of clean energy systems integration into the power systems, by considering flexibility and uncertainty as key elements
