Sheridan Brown

Lecturer/Senior Lecturer

School of Social Sciences

Role

Sheridan Brown is a senior lecturer and teacher trainer in the Nottingham Institute of Education. She member of the teaching team and Pathway Leader for English on the PGCE in Post-Compulsory Education and Training.  She also teaches on the MA in Education.

In 2017, Sheridan won the NTU Vice Chancellor's Teaching Award for her inspirational teaching.

Career overview

Sheridan joined NTU in 2012 as a lecturer on the PGCE in Post-Compulsory Education and Training.  Since then, she has taught across all aspects of the course.  In 2014, she took on further responsibility for designing and leading the specialist English pathway.

Prior to working at NTU, Sheridan taught in several further education colleges, across the East Midlands.  In her early career, her main subject area was English, but she also taught on a range of foundation courses for learners with special education needs and/or disabilities and disaffected young people.  Later in her FE career, she was course leader for FdA Teaching Assistants and in FE based PGCE teacher training provision.  Alongside these roles, she was also a staff trainer in disability awareness and equality and diversity.

Research areas

Sheridan's research interests focus mainly on the psychological and emotional experience of becoming a teacher - particularly in the post-compulsory sector.  Since 2012, and starting with her MA in Education, she has explored a range of themes, such as teacher-agency, emotional intelligence, self efficacy, identity-formation and the notion of teacher training as a 'rite of passage'.

Along with a NIoE colleague, she is currently working on a longitudinal research project which is exploring how trainee teachers and their mentors might be supported to understand the process of becoming a teacher, in order to get the most out of their professional relationship.

External activity

Sheridan is an External Examiner for the University of Huddersfield's suite of in-service and pre-service teacher training programmes.
