About the Doctoral School
Who are we?
The purpose of our Doctoral School is to offer a service that supports all postgraduate researchers at NTU, so that there is consistency in the doctoral experience across all academic Schools and programmes.
In addition to facilitating the administrative side of your degree, we offer a Doctoral Education, Training and Development (DETD) programme and facilitate the doctoral community with regular communications, research sharing events, and socials.
We are invested in creating a thriving research culture for our doctoral candidates.
What do we do?
We are responsible for supporting candidates with the processes and regulations of their doctoral degree from application to graduation. Our team oversees the administration of the entire doctoral journey, including the application process, induction, yearly monitoring and degree management, thesis submission, and examination arrangements.
That means that for many aspects of your doctoral degree, we are your first port of call.
Our key services include:
- Doctoral Candidate Administration (e.g. enrolment, registration, suspensions of studies, change of supervisory teams)
- Doctoral Candidate Progression and Monitoring (Project Approval, Annual Monitoring, thesis submission, Viva arrangements, thesis amendments, and PGR Dashboard support)
- Doctoral Communications and Community
- The Doctoral Education, Training and Development programme
- Supervisor training
- Support in dealing with external organisations e.g. local authorities or the Home Office
- Signposting and offering guidance on how to access services at NTU e.g. payment of stipends, support from disability services
- PGR and governance.
You can come to see us at one of our Service Desks (see below) or email us at doctoralschool@ntu.ac.uk.
Who else can help?
We work alongside the Directors of Doctoral Programmes for each academic School, in addition to the appointed PGR Reps and the NTSU VP for Postgrad. You can also find a full overview of all guidance and conditions in the Research Degrees Handbook.
For circumstances relating to your academic School – such as teaching, workspaces and equipment, and appointment of supervisors – you can contact your Director of Doctoral Programmes. You can also contact your Postgraduate Representative for support.
