Support to Study

Throughout your time at NTU you might face difficulties that affect your ability to engage with your course or impact your wider University experience.

This could be because of personal circumstances, your wellbeing, a disability or a long-term health condition (including mental health and neurodiversity), or unexpected life events.

We offer a range of support services to help you throughout your studies. If at any point you feel you need extra help and guidance, please speak to your personal tutor in your academic school. Their details can be found on your student dashboard.

You can also reach out to our Student Support Services team via the online support and wellbeing form or the PATHways drop-in service. You may also want to explore the options within the consideration of personal circumstances process.

There may be times where we feel a more structured approach is needed to ensure you receive the right support. Particularly if your wellbeing, health, or a disability is creating barriers to your learning, or affecting your wider University experience and engagement in activities.

Support to Study policy and process

The Support to Study policy provides a framework to ensure that we work collaboratively with students. We want to put the right support and action plans in place as early as possible, in order for you to continue your studies and get the most from your University experience.

It is usually initiated by your Academic School, though in some cases it may also be initiated by Student Support Services.

Support to Study may help to:

  • Put in place additional support to meet your needs.
  • Develop an action plan to help you to continue your studies and University experience successfully.
  • Consider what additional steps you could take (e.g. extending or delaying an assessment, or taking a temporary break in study, if needed).

If the Support to Study process is initiated for you, you will be invited to an informal Stage One initial discussion (usually with your personal tutor) to talk about any difficulties you are facing, what support you might need, and agree a supported action plan.

If this support isn't effective, or there are more serious concerns regarding your current wellbeing and engagement with the support offered, you may be invited to a more formal Stage Two meeting to review your circumstances.

Responding to emergency situations

In rare situations where there is a serious and immediate concern for your safety or wellbeing — or the safety of others — NTU may need to act quickly to make sure you’re safe and supported.

This could include:

  • Contacting emergency services (999).
  • Placing you on an Emergency Temporary Break in Study.
  • Reaching out to your trusted emergency contact.

These steps are only taken when absolutely necessary, and always with your wellbeing as the top priority.
