Reflecting on South Asian Heritage Month at NTU
Published: 17/08/2021
Officially inaugurated in 2020, South Asian Heritage Month is held every year from 18 July to 17 August and seeks to commemorate, mark and celebrate the history and culture of British South Asian people.
A significant proportion of the Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic communities within the UK are from a South Asian background and this is also reflected in our NTU community. Therefore, we are pleased to have been able to feature South Asian Heritage month as part of this year’s Equality Diversity and Inclusion calendar of events.
Our celebrations of South Asian Heritage Month have included creating a dedicated EDI SharePoint page for all NTU students and colleagues to access and learn about why South Asian Heritage Month is such an important initiative for us to get involved in. The page will remain live and accessible after 17 August.
Visit the South Asian Heritage Month SharePoint page to learn about the background of this month, including access to a video conversation with our Human Resources colleague, Sophia Hussain, who shared her experience of growing up in a South Asian household in Britain, and a short video from NTU Faith and Chaplaincy outlining the four largest faiths present in South Asia today.
In addition to this, on 19 July we welcomed members of the South Asian Heritage Month team and Jagdish Patel, who spoke about the importance of the month and shared their experiences. Our MyHub newsroom featured an insightful personal blog from Student Support Services colleague, Rundeep Sembi, who wrote about the importance of role models that look like us.
Over the month, our students and colleagues were also invited to put their knowledge of South Asian Heritage to the test and take part in an online quiz (participation open 18 July – 17 August), and be in with the chance to win an Amazon voucher. The three lucky winners of this quiz will be contacted by end of August so, if you took part – keep your fingers crossed and an eye out on your NTU email!
How you can continue to learn more about South Asian Heritage Month
Whilst South Asian Heritage month may have come to an official close, NTU the University will continue to support and encourage our community to learn about and celebrate the rich diversity that we share across our NTU campuses.
