Over 9000 kg of items donated to local charities through The Big Clear Out
Published: 26/09/2024
Thank you to all our students who donated their unloved items and spare food to the Big Clear Out, instead of sending them to landfill.
The scheme sees the British Heart Foundation drop boxes and food collection crates at NTU and UPP halls receptions between May and September, encouraging students to donate their unloved items and spare food instead of sending them to landfill.
Now in its second year, the scheme saw over 1500 kg of food (30 large crates worth) donated to local foodbanks Himmah (City) and NG11 (Clifton) and over 900 bags of homewares donated to the British Heart Foundation (BHF). This is higher than in 2023, when 800kg of food and 500 bags of homewares were donated.
Lots of these donations, including household items and electrical goods will be sold in BHF shops to raise money for vital medical research. Food will also be given to those in need in the local community through emergency food parcels.
Continued growth
The Big Clear Out continues to grow - alongside the rise in donations, duvets were also saved from landfill through Dunelm’s Textile Takeback scheme and some larger electrical items were donated at a Currys recycling centre. Items of food will also be given to NTSU’s Help in the Community Society.
Lucy Yates, Sustainability Engagement Officer, NTU, said: 'We are delighted to once again be helping local charities through the Big Clear Out. The donations received will make a real difference, supporting our local community and funding vital research.'
