Dignity and respect
Working or studying at the University means being part of an inclusive and respectful community. Read about our standards and expectations for upholding these values.
Our key messages
The University is firmly committed to sustaining a highly effective learning environment characterised by fairness, equality of opportunity, and the valuing of diversity and diverse perspectives. Principles of dignity and respect underpin all that we do, and NTU has very clear expectations around how all members of our community treat – and are treated by – others.
The key messages of Respect at NTU are:
- Respect is important to NTU, helping to maintain a positive, healthy environment for work and study.
- Respect makes for a better place to work, learn and live.
- We all have a shared responsibility to make it happen. We can lead by example, and challenge or report behaviours which don't match the NTU standard.
Respect at NTU
The following video is a great introduction to the NTU ethos. You can also watch the video on YouTube.
Respect at NTU – Give it. Get it. Expect it
As a university, we expect all members of the NTU community to be mindful of the impact of their behaviour, conduct, and interaction with others. Discriminatory behaviour, including harassment and bullying, is not tolerated and may also be unlawful.
This includes hateful and discriminatory behaviour towards groups with protected characteristics based on:
- age
- disability
- gender reassignment
- marriage and civil partnership
- pregnancy and maternity
- race, religion or belief
- sex and sexual orientation
Respectful behaviour extends to the use of social media. Any form of behaviour online that demeans or humiliates is also not accepted, and these behaviours breach our Student Code of Behaviour and Employee Bullying, Harassment, and Victimisation Policy. It also goes against the university’s Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Policy as well as the Dignity and Respect Policy. Breaches can result in severe consequences.
Dignity and Respect Policy
The purpose of the Dignity and Respect Policy is to set out the University’s commitment to an inclusive and positive environment, to articulate the University’s expectations regarding conducting yourself in line with the values of equality and inclusion. The policy also outlines the actions that a staff member or student can take if they are subjected to bullying, harassment, or other unacceptable behaviour.
