This course has been drawn from our suite of Construction Management masters programmes. It will provide you with an enhanced understanding of the complex economic and financial environments within which construction organisations operate.

A CPD certificate will be issued upon successful completion of the course. Successful completion of this course can also contribute 15 credits towards a full 180 credit MSc Built Environment award.

The course will develop your understanding of the strategic requirements and capabilities required to plan and manage a business in complex environments. It explores the social, cultural and political and organisational differences between peoples in order to improve understanding and reduce cultural barriers, whilst valuing and maintaining the rich diversity of cultures and languages.

You will develop ethical and corporate social responsibility in the construction business environment, and the necessary skills and strengths to enable you to analyse financially construction company accounts, such as to diagnose specific financial problem areas within such companies and to prescribe satisfactory financially-based solutions.

You will ultimately create frameworks that can be used to assess and compare practical aids to decision-making in business.

By the end of the course you will be able to:

  • Participate in a forum for the exchange of views on environmental issues affecting the corporate and project world of construction
  • Use paper-based and information technologies to acquire key economic and financial information
  • Work individually and in groups to achieve identified goals
  • Extend presentation skills across a wide variety of scenarios
  • Analyse complex inter-related information and processes to encourage critical thinking
  • Through debate improve problem solving skills.

  • Corporate financial management, working capital, cost of capital and capital markets
  • Risk measurement and portfolio performance
  • International business and the financing requirements of national, international and multinational construction companies
  • Financial planning and control of a construction-based project
  • Estimating, planning and controlling the total investment
  • Cash flow prediction and management.
