Advanced Hydraulics and Hydrology

Civil and Structural Engineering Mx
  • Level(s) of study: Professional / Short course
  • Study mode(s): Part-time (weekend)
  • Location: City Campus
  • Starting: 8 February 2020
  • Course duration: 8 and 22 February and 7 and 21 March 2020, Saturdays 9 am - 5 pm

This course provides you with a detailed understanding of advanced hydraulic topics such as coastal engineering and hydraulics structures as well as advanced hydrology topics such as estimating floods, flood routing and groundwater.

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • design simple coastal structures and other hydraulic structures
  • estimate floods using a variety of methods including low flow estimation for small catchments
  • route a flood and predict the maximum flow with time along a given river or stream
  • appreciate the importance of groundwater and estimate groundwater recharge and model pollutants transport in groundwater.

A CPD certificate will be issued upon successful completion of the course.

Successful completion can also contribute 15 credits towards a postgraduate award.

What you'll study

On this course you will investigate:

  • coastal engineering, including wave motion, linear wave theory, wave prediction from wind records and the action of waves on beaches and coastal structures
  • hydraulic structures, such as dams, weirs, flumes, spillways, energy dissipaters, control gates, discharge and outlet structures
  • how to estimate floods using FEH, index flood and growth curve and probability distributions
flood routing, including non-storage routing, storage routing, hydraulic routing, flood routing in practice
  • groundwater and flow equations, flow nets, unconfined flow and groundwater recharge, numerical models in groundwater and modelling of pollutants.

How you’re taught

In addition to your lectures and seminars, you will also have a one-to-one session with an academic who will provide you with guidance on how to complete projects successfully and to ensure deadlines are understood.

Entry requirements

This course is open to professionals at any stage of their career.
