Current Practices in Civil Engineering

Civil and Structural Engineering Mx
  • Level(s) of study: Professional / Short course
  • Study mode(s): Part-time (weekend)
  • Location: City Campus
  • Starting: October 2018
  • Course duration: Four Saturdays

This course evaluates current practices in civil engineering including Building Information Modelling (BIM), sensing technologies, geospatial engineering, modularised construction, design management and engineering ethics.

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • review engineering principles in conditions assessment and structural health monitoring
  • evaluate the design and installation approaches used for various sensing systems
  • explain engineering principles applied across a wide range of applications
  • appraise the design and construction processes across a range of themes
  • adapt techniques and novel solutions to a wide range of application
  • constructively evaluate and endeavour to improve health and safety issues
  • explain and debate with technical and policy-based evidence, complex sustainability and environmental issues
  • apply your knowledge of mathematics, science, IT, design, business context and engineering practice to novel and challenging situations.

What you'll study

This course will include:

  • advanced understanding of Building Information Modelling in terms of available tools and impact upon practice
  • in-depth theoretical fundamentals, problems and challenges which an engineer has to tackle when assessing and monitoring civil infrastructure
  • advances in (and applications of) sensing technologies and data management tools
  • a critical analysis of modularised construction
  • an evaluation of design management practices
  • design management and the concept of waste
  • modularised construction (volumetric and component based approaches)
  • structural forms such as skeleton and mass structures, reciprocal frames, domes, shells and tension structures
  • geospatial engineering
  • the monitoring of civil infrastructure and sensing systems for structural health monitoring.
