  • Course duration: Four Saturdays, 9 am - 5 pm (13 and 27 February, 13 and 27 March 2021) plus exam

This course provides you with a detailed understanding of advanced hydraulic topics such as coastal engineering and hydraulics structures as well as advanced hydrology topics such as estimating floods, flood routing and groundwater.


By the end of this course, you’ll be able to:

  • design simple coastal structures and other hydraulic structures
  • estimate floods using a variety of methods including low-flow estimation for small catchments
  • route a flood, and predict the maximum flow with time, along a given river or stream
  • appreciate the importance of groundwater
  • estimate groundwater recharge and model pollutants in groundwater.

A CPD certificate will be issued upon successful completion of a course.

Passing the assessed element (an exam or coursework) can also contribute credit towards a postgraduate award. All candidates seeking credit will be assessed on a case-by-case basis. If you wish to receive credit you must mention this at the time of application, or with your tutor at the earliest opportunity.

What you'll study

This course will include:

  • coastal engineering, including wave motion, linear wave theory, wave prediction from wind records and the action of waves on beaches and coastal structures
  • hydraulic structures such as dams, weirs, flumes, spillways, energy dissipaters, control gates, discharge and outlet structures
  • how to estimate floods using FEH, index flood, growth curve and probability distributions
  • flood routing including non-storage routing, storage routing, hydraulic routing and flood routing in practice
  • groundwater and flow equations, flow nets and unconfined flow
  • groundwater recharge, numerical models in groundwater and modelling of pollutants.

How you’re taught

Teaching and learning will take place using a flexible programme of lectures, workshops, seminars and tutorials.

Entry requirements

Level: Professional/postgraduate

Entry Requirements: You should have a minimum of three years’ professional experience and have the support of your employer to integrate study and projects into your day-to-day work.

You will probably be employed on significant infrastructure or building works, with experience of developing and coordinating projects.

If you wish to receive credit, you should also have a 2:2 honours degree in a built environment subject area.

Applicants with non-standard entry qualifications and/or relevant experience will be considered on an individual basis.
