This eight-week Continuing Professional Development (CPD) course will provide you with a basis for learning more about English legal systems and processes, along with methods of dispute resolution.

With links to construction companies worldwide, the School of Architecture, Design and the Built Environment is key to supporting your progress to senior management.

You may have experience of construction legal processes, but can you apply appropriate legal decision making? A course in legal rights and responsibilities will prepare you for any challenge.

After successfully completing this course you will be able to:

  • critically review the key elements of the English legal system, including the identification and application of recognised legal sources and criminal and civil liability
  • discuss, analyse, critically evaluate and apply key torts – including negligence, occupier’s liability and nuisance to construction projects
  • discuss, analyse, critically evaluate and apply the key principles of dispute resolution, including court action, arbitration, adjudication, mediation and conciliation as they impact on construction disputes.

At the end of the eight-week course, you will be awarded a CPD certificate.

Passing the assessed element (an exam or coursework) can also contribute ten credits towards a postgraduate award. All candidates seeking credit will be assessed on a case-by-case basis. If you wish to follow the credit route you must mention this on your application form.

Successful completion of this course does not mean automatic entry to the MSc Construction Project Management course (you will need to submit a new application). Find out more about the online MSc in Construction Project Management.

What you'll study

This course will cover:

  • English legal systems and processes
  • review of key torts – including negligence, occupier’s liability and nuisance
  • methods of dispute resolution including courts, arbitration, adjudication, mediation and conciliation.

Entry requirements

You should have at least a 2:2 honours degree in a construction or industry-related subject. Alternatively, you should have a minimum of three years’ professional experience and the support of your employer to integrate study and projects into your day-to-day work.

The ideal candidate is likely to be employed on significant infrastructure or building works, with experience of developing and co-ordinating projects.

Construction class fees include access to our online learning platform (Engage), course materials and digital reading materials. Fees do not include any personal expenses for new technical equipment or office supplies.
