On this course, you’ll gain a hands-on experience of 3D printing, with opportunities to explore materials and see how the equipment works, and to develop a personal project.


Artists and designers of all backgrounds use 3D printing to create models and parts, from simple forms to detailed working prototypes.

It’s a technology that’s become a quick and affordable means to produce one-off items.

This course is therefore aimed at professionals and hobbyists of all backgrounds and abilities who are interested in architecture, craft, art and design.

There’ll be demonstrations, 1-2-1 time and practical activities to help you experiment with this fascinating technology.

With support from the tutor, you’ll research a project of your choice based on your own ideas.

This could be a project that you’re already working on, or something that you’re itching to make a reality.

All the materials will be supplied.

What will I gain?

Upon completing the course, you’ll have an overview of 3D printing, a project either completed or in development, and an understanding of how the technology can be used in your work.

Tutor Profile: Mark Beeston is a senior technician in the model making workshop at Nottingham Trent University.

He has over 20 years of experience within the creative industries as an independent designer, artist, maker and facilitator in areas such as sculpture, furniture, product research and development, theatre, film and outdoor play.

What you'll study

On this course, you will:

  • be introduced to design software including SketchUp, AutoCAD and TinkerCAD
  • explore the stages of 3D printing to produce models, objects or parts
  • learn about materials and processes that you might want to explore further after the course.
