This course will help you visualise a space, read and scale down technical drawings, and find solutions to some of the challenges of architectural model making.

It's ideal for anyone interested in model making such as hobbyists and architecture professionals as well as theatre set designers, photographers and artists who'll find the skills transferrable to their own practice.


To attend this course no previous experience of model making is necessary - just plenty of enthusiasm.

It’s taught in NTU’s model making workshops, a well-equipped, dedicated learning space run by experienced technicians.

Tutor Profile: Mark Beeston (evening course) is a senior technician in the model making workshop at Nottingham Trent University.

He has over 20 years of experience within the creative industries as an independent designer, artist, maker and facilitator in areas such as sculpture, furniture, product research and development, theatre, film and outdoor play.

Tutor Profile: Adriana Clark (summer course) is professional model builder and technician at Nottingham Trent University.

She has worked for many different architectural practices making hundreds of professional models in various scales.

She has a true passion for architectural model making and provides her students with the best support possible.

Her enthusiastic and lively personality also makes every session really good fun.

What you'll study

On this course, you will:

  • learn classic model making tips and techniques such as skilful scalpel use, correct material choice, accurate measuring and cutting, gluing, sculpting, vacuum forming and spray painting
  • be given a directed project, drawings and all the equipment to build a simple 1:100 scale model, with its own baseboard
  • complete the project from original material to a professionally finished model
  • photograph your finished work using a heliodon.
