This course is designed as a wholly practical introduction to computer-aided design (CAD) for civil and structural engineers and allied professionals.

It will help you rapidly develop your skills from beginner to intermediate level, allowing you to work on your own project from start to finish.


To attend this course, you don’t need any prior experience, nor do you need to prepare or bring anything - it starts from level zero.

This course is specifically for:

  • early career professionals in civil and structural professions and trades who wish to get ahead by acquiring on-demand CAD skills;
  • experienced civil and structural professionals with little or no experience in CAD; and
  • anyone considering going into the civil and structural fields who would like to have a feel for designing to see what it is all about.

Whilst the course is specifically designed for civil and structural engineers, the content is also suitable for anyone wanting to become a competent CAD user for general engineering purposes.

What will I gain?

You’ll leave the course with AutoCAD drafting skills.

You’ll be able to create and present 2D drawings which will improve your CV with a set of skills that are in high demand in the engineering industry.

Tutor profile: Brendan Obiechefu teaches Computer Aided Design (CAD) to the undergraduate civil engineering students at NTU.

He worked as design engineer in Nigeria, before coming to the UK where he gained his MSc in Civil and Structural Engineering.

Brendan is currently part of NTU’s Structural Health Monitoring research group.

What you'll study

On this course, you will:

  • learn to use AutoCAD to produce 2D architectural drawings plans
  • learn to produce structural design drawings (including plans, sections and structural details)
  • learn to dimension, annotate, plot and get print-ready design drawings (plans, elevations, sections and details)
  • start and finish your own project (i.e. produce plans and structural drawings for a building of your choice).

The course will be delivered in seminars and by completing modular practical projects.
