Civil engineers find creative ways to solve real-world problems, developing the physical infrastructure for society to exist: from bridges to houses, and from roads to hospitals and train stations. Our Master of Engineering (MEng) in Civil Engineering brings together undergraduate and Masters-level course content. You'll develop high-level knowledge of civil engineering principles and theory, alongside analytical, practical and engineering skills and techniques.

How does this course differ from our BSc (Hons) Civil Engineering and BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering courses?

  • Our MEng (Hons) Civil Engineering course builds on the three (or four with placement) years of our BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering course with an additional year of study.  This additional year will give you the chance to work on more complex projects and broaden your engineering knowledge base.
  • Our BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering course contains a higher level of mathematics and structural analysis, in comparison to our BSc (Hons) Civil Engineering course. Our BEng course partially satisfies the educational base for Chartered Engineer status (CEng).

*Accreditation is pending and, once given, the course will be accredited under licence from the Engineering Council, by the Joint Board of Moderators, which represents the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE), the Institute of Highway Engineers (IHE) and the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CIHT). Accreditation will also be sought from the Chartered Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors.

What you'll study

The course is designed around the core themes of the professional accrediting bodies, relating your learning to application in the real world. You will develop your general understanding of civil engineering, focusing on key core subject areas – geotechnics, and materials and structures.

You will develop knowledge and skills in: architectural and building technology; computer-aided design; health and safety; the environment; hydraulics; ground engineering; and structural engineering. You will look at creativity and innovation within engineering, gaining a deeper understanding of engineering principles and practice.

  • Year One

    Civil Engineering Design Projects (40 credits)

    • This module will form an introduction to the construction industry, and the key roles played by civil engineering professionals.
    • You'll look at areas such health and safety, environmental and sustainability considerations, legislation, and the role of construction in the UK economy.
    • The module will also focus on building your professional communication skills through presentations, an introduction to computer-aided design, and career planning.

    Engineering Materials (20 credits)

    • This module is designed to introduce you to the materials encountered in civil engineering and general construction.
    • You'll look at areas such as geology, social mechanics, steel, concrete, bricks and ceramics, and organic materials. You'll develop an understanding of the materials' properties and applications.

    Engineering Surveying (20 credits)

    • The aim of this module is to introduce you to the basic principles and purposes of engineering surveying. You'll learn the theory in lectures and tutorials, with hands-on seminar and laboratory sessions introducing the practical surveying field skills required by industry.
    • You'll learn how to use standard surveying instruments, how to set out and control construction works, and how to measure existing buildings.

    Residential field course

    The module will culminate in a week-long residential field trip, where you'll put into practice the skills that you've learnt throughout the module. Working in groups, you'll plan, manage and assess your own programme to meet set targets. A range of typical engineering surveying instrumentation will be used to produce a site plan, set out simulated construction works, and to measure existing structures.

    Introduction to Structural Engineering (20 credits)

    • This module aims to provide you with knowledge of relevant statics, and a quantitative and qualitative appreciation of the behaviour and design of beams and triangulated frameworks.
    • The module covers areas such as statistics, beam structures, and loadings.

    Engineering Mathematics and Mechanics (20 credits)

    • This module will furnish you with a comprehensive range of mathematical techniques, providing you with the foundation for the study of more advanced mathematical techniques in Year Two.
    • You'll develop a strong foundation of skills and knowledge, enabling you to solve civil engineering problems.
  • Year Two

    Structural Analysis, Design and Detailing (40 credits)

    • This module will act as an introduction to the structural behaviour of elements in reinforced concrete and steelwork, looking in depth at their design and detailing.
    • You'll also be introduced to a range of new and emerging technologies within the construction industry.

    Construction Practice and the Environment (20 credits)

    • The aim of this module is to improve your knowledge of practice within the construction industry, introducing you to the roles and responsibilities that you may undertake during placement, after graduation, and as you progress in your career.
    • You'll look at key areas such as project organisation, procurement, planning, programming, management, and contract and commercial documentation and administration.

    Integration of Engineering Applications (20 credits)

    • This module will introduce you to new and emerging technologies within the construction industry, in relation to Engineering Surveying, CAD and BIM.
    • You will work in a project group with final year students to simulate a work situation where you will produce, present and defend a scheme design.

    Further Engineering Mathematics and Fluid Mechanics (20 credits)

    • Building on your mathematical skills and knowledge developed in Year One, this module will provide you with the mathematical and fluid mechanics knowledge and techniques required as a civil engineer.
    • In this module you will look at: probability; calculus; vectors and matrices; and fluid mechanics, including dimensional analysis, flow through pipes, and hydraulic machinery.

    Ground Engineering (20 credits)

    • This module will develop your appreciation of fundamental soil and geological properties.
    • You'll measure and test different geological and geotechnical materials, allowing you to recognise and investigate ground-related problems and hazards.
  • Year Three and Four

    Optional placement year

    In your third year, you'll have the opportunity to take a year-long full-time placement. This year in industry will offer you hands-on experience, adding invaluable knowledge and skills to your CV. Many students return to their placement company after graduation, having developed a useful network of contacts within the industry.

    Recent placement destinations have included VolkerFitzpatrick, Jackson Civil Engineering, North Midland Construction, and Eurovia Group Limited. The majority of these roles come with a salary, with some students earning over £20,000 for their year. In recent years some students have also been placed internationally, in destinations such as Nigeria, Hong Kong, Oman, Norway, Denmark, France, Belgium, Cyprus and Russia.

    Successful completion of the placement year leads to an extra qualification – the Diploma in Professional Practice.

    Third / Fourth Year (with placement)

    Individual with Group project (40 credits)

    • The majority of this module will be formed by a self-led research project or dissertation; a significant body of work allowing you to research in depth an agreed topic relating to the construction industry.
    • You'll also work on a group project over the course of the year, relating to a real-world engineering scheme. You'll work in a team environment, producing and presenting a design scheme.

    Infrastructure Engineering 1 (20 credits)

    • This module will broaden your understanding of the wider urban environment through the introduction of infrastructure topics such as transport, highways, rail, asset management, and water. You'll develop an appreciation of the issues that influence decision-making, design and implementation of major infrastructure schemes.
    • You'll study these topics within the context of sustainable developments, looking at key elements of environmental legislation.

    Further Structural Design (20 credits)

    • This module will broaden your knowledge of the design of structural frameworks and how they withstand forces acting on them.
    • It introduces the most common methods of providing stability and robustness to framed structures.

    Further Geotechnical Engineering and Design (20 credits)

    • Building on the principles and theory you'll develop in Year Two, this module will provide a sound background to the decision-making, design and implementation of geotechnical design.
    • You'll learn to analyse and design some typical engineering problems involved in the construction of geotechnical structures, and develop informed solutions in line with current design standards and industry approach.
    • You'll look at topics such as soil mechanics, foundations, slope stability, and the development of brownfield sites.

    Professional Responsibilities and Development in Civil Engineering (20 credits)

    • This module is based around four themes: health, safety and welfare; the profession and wider society; clients, stakeholders, communities and government; and sustainability.
    • It's aim is to fully prepare you for graduate roles, with the knowledge, skills, awareness and professionalism expected by graduate employers.
  • Final Year

    Core modules

    Major Design and Construction Project (40 credits)

    • This module provides the opportunity for you to develop abilities in undertaking a design project that is large scale and / or complex in character. It is intended to be a capstone to many of the modules studied through the course, especially over the last two years of study.
    • Working in a group, you'll develop high-level team working skills, and have the resource available to undertake an ambitious project, culminating in a final presentation and exhibition.

    Infrastructure Engineering 2 (20 credits)

    • This module will build upon the broad introduction given in Infrastructure Engineering 1.
    • You'll use standards, codes of practice and design and construction methodologies to look at pavements and light rail infrastructure, as well as water and energy systems, in analytical detail.
    • You'll study these topics in the context of sustainable developments, looking at key elements of environmental legislation.

    Strategic and Operational Management (20 credits)

    • This module is intended to provide prospective civil engineers with an understanding of the complex political, cultural, economic and financial environments within which civil engineering, architectural design and construction organisations operate. You'll look at both the strategic organisational level and the individual project level.
    • You'll explore the civil engineering environment, project and risk management, and a range of different management philosophies and techniques.

    Optional modules

    Alongside the core modules, you’ll also get the opportunity to study two of the following modules. These are subject to change, availability and numbers.

    Negotiated Work, Volunteering and / or Mentoring Practice (20 credits)

    • This module will provide the opportunity to engage with charitable or international aid-based work following the completion of your final year.
    • Your project may align directly with civil engineering-related activities, or those outside, but whose nature is considered positive and progressive in developing your global citizenship, personal skills and competency.
    • You'll secure your opportunity through personal initiative, or with the help and guidance of staff.

    Advanced Engineering Mathematics and Numerical Modelling (20 credits)

    • This module is designed to further improve your mathematical understanding of events, situations and problems relevant to the role of the civil engineer.
    • You'll develop your ability to undertake verification of situations by using simplified numerical models, in addition to being able to apply more advanced mathematics to realistic engineering scenarios.

    Advanced Structural Mechanics and Computer Applications (20 credits)

    • This module will introduce more specialised topics within structural analysis, such as arches and cables, plate analysis, and dynamic analysis of structures.
    • You'll develop a better understanding of the behaviour and performance of more complex structural systems, and mechanical behaviour of materials under various states of stress and strain conditions.

    Geophysical and non-destructive investigation (20 credits)

    • This module develops your knowledge and skills in relation to a range of site investigation and material investigation techniques.
    • This module will cover two themes, the first being engineering geophysics, focused on the use of geophysical techniques for civil engineering investigations (typically ground investigations). The second theme will look at non-destructive testing, typically for material and structural assessment.

    Geospatial Engineering (20 credits)

    • This module develops your knowledge and skills in relation to geospatial engineering (also known as geomatics) in a broad sense, in order to provide awareness of processes and issues across a wide range of topics related to civil engineering from the viewpoint of an engineering surveyor.
    • You'll reinforce your existing knowledge in the use of surveying equipment, learn the basics of how to process various types of spatial data in appropariate software packages, and gain an understanding of the limitations and accuracies involved.

    Available options will be confirmed at the start of each academic session on an operational basis.

How you’re taught

How will I learn?

  • In Year One approximately 40% of your time is spent in scheduled learning sessions, and in Year Two approximately 35%. This includes lectures; seminars; tutorials; laboratory practical exercises, such as making and testing concrete, assessing structural forms and testing beams; fieldwork, including site visits, field trips and practical exercises; and IT sessions, including computer-aided design (CAD).
  • You will also be involved in self-directed project work with the support of NOW, our virtual learning environment.
  • Outside of timetabled sessions you will need to undertake self-directed independent study. This will include preparing for lectures, researching, completing coursework, developing a portfolio, and directed reading to expand your knowledge.
  • In your final year the scheduled learning sessions reduce to approximately 30% of your time, as more time is focused on your group and individual projects.

Trips and study visits

  • You will benefit from our established links with industry, ensuring the continual relevancy of our course content. You'll be exposed to industry professionals by working on live project briefs set by companies from industry, such as the Friends of Cromford Canal, who briefed our students to investigate restoring a section of the canal around Codnor Park Reservoir. You'll also benefit from guest lecturers, visits to working sites, industry-sponsored awards, and work placements.
  • You will also have opportunities to work with companies to gain new skills. Building on your skills and experience from the very start of the course, each year a company join first year students on a bridge-building exercise. Over the last couple of years, this has included Interserve and North Midland Construction.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed through a mix of coursework, practical exercises and exams. The coursework will make up the majority of your assessment and will consist of group and individual projects, reports, presentations, and essays. You will receive feedback throughout each module.

To progress through the course you will need to achieve 120 credits each year. The number of credits for each module are listed above.
