Introduction to Drawing

Introduction to Drawing
  • Level(s) of study: Short course
  • Study mode(s): Short course
  • Location: City Campus
  • Starting: 7 October 2019; 27 July 2020
  • Course duration: Monday 6 - 8:30 pm for eight weeks, or one week intensive

This course is an energetic exploration of the ways in which people use drawing and mark making to analyse and respond to physical (and metaphysical) spaces.

It’s aimed at anyone who is new to drawing or people with experience looking for a challenge.

This course aims to enhance your ability to produce expressive, analytical, mixed media and collaborative drawings.

It will also improve your knowledge and understanding of traditional and contemporary approaches to drawing and mark making.

Topics and content will be dictated largely by the aspirations of the group.

However, the key themes will include analytical drawing, life drawing, objective drawing, expressionistic mark making, psycho-geography and presentation values.

What will I gain?

As a result of attending this course it will be possible for you to produce expressive drawings with confidence.

You be able to produce work that crosses media which attests to an enhanced understanding of context and an appreciation of psycho-geography.

You will also be able to use appropriate terms such as linear perspective, orthographic projection, frottage, mark making, psycho-geography, semiotics and more with confidence and in context.

Tutor profile: Chris Lewis-Jones is an artist/flanuer who travels across disciplines, media and contexts.

He is based at Primary in Nottingham, but is also an Associate Artist at Nottingham Contemporary and Art & Craft Lead Tutor for the WEA across the East Midlands.

Although his work has been influenced by the theory and practice of psycho-geography, drawing remains central to his practice, and he is never without a sketchbook!

In addition to enjoying analytical drawing, Chris also explores expressionistic approaches to mark making and has been commissioned to undertake drawing performances at galleries and other venues across the country.
