English for Academic Purposes
  • Level(s) of study: Short course
  • Study mode(s): Short course
  • Starting: 12 July 2021
  • Course duration: Monday to Friday 10:00 – 13:00 GMT, two weeks

To succeed at university, you need to be able to read a variety of study materials and to think, speak and write about a wide range of topics.

This online course is a challenging and enjoyable way to develop the skills and language to do this.

It is aimed at motivated individuals and groups who want to get a head start in their studies and become more confident in using English in academic settings.

Over the ten days of the course, you’ll complete exercises designed to develop your core skills in academic listening, speaking, reading and writing, whilst at the same time introducing you to some key aspects of academic culture in the UK.

Your interactions with the study materials, your tutor and other students on the module will take place online via Zoom.

You will complete interactive activities, contribute to small group discussions and collaborative tasks in breakout rooms and participate in online tutorials in real time.

In addition to these synchronous sessions you’ll be expected to complete at least two hours of independent study each day to fully benefit from the course.

Assessment

You will submit the final draft of a short piece of academic writing which you will develop throughout the course.

You will also work with other students to plan and deliver a short presentation on a chosen topic.

You will receive detailed feedback on both of these, as well as an NTU certificate to indicate that you have successfully completed the course.

Support from your tutor

An important element of the course is the feedback you will receive from your tutor on the work you do.

Feedback provides the basis for your language development, and your tutor will be available for both group and individual consultations throughout the course.

What will I gain?

By the end of the course, you will have improved your English language skills for academic purposes and be more confident in communicating clearly in English and expressing your ideas.

You will also have developed your skills as an online learner.

Tutor Profile: You will be taught by expert EAP tutors from the Nottingham Language Centre at NTU.

These tutors have considerable experience in designing and delivering online courses.

Indicative maximum class size: 12
