Italian

Italian Mx
  • Level(s) of study: Short course
  • Study mode(s): Short course
  • Starting: Week beginning 12 October 2020
  • Course duration: 23 weeks (term-time only)

During the first term, all Italian teaching will take place online.

Study is divided into one hour of group teaching each week (in which the language tutor will deliver the class using Microsoft Teams live streaming) and one independent hour which will contain content provided by the tutor to compliment the group session.

Your weekly engagement with the material in your own time is mandatory and essential for your progress in the group sessions with your tutor.

In addition, you will need to complete, on average, two to four hours per week of directed and independent learning (further details will be provided at a later stage).

Your syllabus is carefully designed so group, independent and directed learning activities complement each other, and your weekly full engagement with all three learning opportunities is critical to your success.

Italian stage 1

This course is suitable for real beginner learners of Italian with virtually no prior knowledge of the language.

During the course you’ll learn how to talk about basic personal details, basic numeracy, and your work or studies. You’ll also learn how to talk about daily routines and past holidays.

At the end of the course, you’ll have some elementary appreciation of Italian grammar and structures and you’ll be able to give basic information about yourself and ask for directions.

You’ll also be able to communicate at a basic level when you are in restaurants and in hotels.

Italian stage 2

This course is suitable for beginner learners of Italian with some knowledge of the language, equivalent to stage 1 (for example GCSE grade B or C).

During the course you’ll learn about life in Italian-speaking countries, food, health, jobs, and how to talk about your childhood.

At the end of the course, you’ll have deepened your appreciation of Italian grammar and structures at an elementary level and you’ll be able to make comparisons, and talk about past events.

Italian stage 4

Italian stage 4 is the right stage for you if you’ve an intermediate knowledge of the language (e.g. A level grade D or E).

During the course you’ll study topics relating, for example, to Italian-made products, family, festivities, and the media.

At the end of the course, you’ll be able to talk about your intentions and wishes and events in the past.

Italian stages 5 and 6

During the course you’ll also study topics relating to your own interests.

At the end of the course, you’ll be able, for example, to summarise extended written and spoken texts, as well as discuss and debate complex ideas.
