This writing course is ideal for anyone interested in family and social history who’d like to bring a long forgotten character back to life.

The work you create might be become a precious family heirloom, or it could be something you’d consider having published in the future.


What will you gain?

By the end of this course you will have created a cohesive, four-dimensional story about a single life for a book, website or family heirloom.

Tutor profile: Hilary Marson is a professional writer with a Masters in Writing from Nottingham Trent University and is currently completing a PhD at Birmingham University.

She has over fifteen years of experience offering technical writing for the British Geological Survey and has taught writing course at the University of Nottingham, Central College Nottingham and the Quaker Study Centre in Birmingham.

Hilary’s current project for writing social and family history is the life story of her ancestor Curly Hearson, hanged at 27 for burning down Nottingham Castle during the 1832 Reform Act riots.

She has published two novels and is a member of the Society of Authors.

What you'll study

On this course, you will:

  • concentrate on a person, such as an ancestor, a historical personality or a fictitious character from your imagination to write about
  • research your character to create ideas and inspiration
  • learn how to create a 3D character map
  • practice creative writing techniques to develop the story of your character
  • develop the character’s story.
