Our Management and Leadership courses are an innovative part-time programme, which will help you to improve and develop your management capabilities.

You will be working on real life work based projects to complete your assignments which allows you to add value to your organisation as you go through the programme. A flexible programme of short intensive study blocks enable you to schedule your studies around the needs of your career.

As a staged award you can sign up for a Certificate, Diploma or Masters award. In total it will take around two years to complete, but this depends on individual student level as it can be completed sooner.

Postgraduate Certificate is aimed at aspiring and middle managers, typically those who have a developing career in a functional area of business or a sector, and are seeking to broaden their management skills.

Postgraduate Diploma focuses on the personal development of middle and aspiring senior managers’ leadership capabilities. It aims to increase your strategic perspective, as well as your skills and confidence as a business leader.

The MSc is aimed at senior managers, heads of departments and aspiring directors, who are looking to expand their knowledge and skills in corporate leadership and governance.

You can choose to follow the general management route or to specialise in Public Services Management or Lean Management. On these specialist routes your modules will be tailored to deepen your understanding in your chosen area.

  • Certificate

    This route will take approx. eight months to complete (depending on applicant)

    Managing and Leading People in Organisations

    This module explores elements of work and organisation, and looks at the qualities and actions needed to be a successful leader and manager.

    Topics include:

    • Management and Leadership
    • Employee Engagement
    • Collaborative Working
    • Communicating with Impact

    Sustainable Financial Management Practices

    This module will provide you with an introduction to financial management and leadership in organisations and the way in which financial objectives impact the activities of an organisation.

    The aim of the module is to enable you to assess an organisation in terms of its financial, ethical and sustainability impact.

    Delivering Values

    This module explores aspects of customers, markets and service delivery, looking at how organisations deliver superior value and achieve competitive advantage.

    You can also choose to specialise in Public Services Management or Lean Management. On these specialist routes, your modules will be tailored to deepen your understanding in these areas.

    You can also take these modules as short courses.

  • Diploma

    This route will take approx. 14 months to complete (depending on applicant) and can be combined with the Certificate.

    Strategic Management and Leadership

    This module considers the way in which organisations develop their strategy and explores a range of business models, strategic analysis and means of strategy formulation.

    Effective Change Management

    This module considers various change management modules and the ways in which changes can be implemented successfully and effectively. You will be able to look at an example of change in your own organisation.

    Consultancy in Action

    This module is a consultancy project. You will work in small groups on an issue identified by the organisation. You will have the opportunity to make constructive recommendations for a positive impact on the business.

    You can also choose to specialise in Public Services Management or Lean Management. On these specialist routes, your modules will be tailored to deepen your understanding in these areas.

    You can also take these modules as short courses.

  • Masters (MSc)

    It will take approx. 15-18 months to complete the full MSc route (depending on applicant)

    Corporate Leadership and Governance

    This module explores critical aspects of managing and leading a business including; risk and reputation, management and accountability. You will be encouraged to look at your own leadership styles and further development requirements.

    Applied Management Research Project (Journal)

    The culmination of studies, this module allows you to develop and undertake your own applied research project within your organisation. There will be sessions on developing your initial ideas and research methods training. Following this participants are supported by online materials and regular contact with their academic supervisor.

How you’re taught

You will be able to choose between a fast-track delivery where you can study two modules back to back in a six-day study block, or the standard delivery where each module takes three days to complete.

The course incorporates a mix of classroom modules, independent supported learning, and a work-based consultancy project.

You will be assessed through various pieces of applied coursework. It is the application of the knowledge you have acquired during the course that will enable you to think strategically, and bringing change within your organisation.

You'll also use our virtual learning environment, NOW, which is a flexible web-based system that gives you 24-hour access to module learning materials and reading lists. It allows you to discuss work with tutors and submit coursework electronically from anywhere in the world.

Careers and employability

This course does not currently offer placements, but the course assignments are based on real-world issues.

Applicants must therefore be in employment, or be able to gain access to an organisation upon which to base assignments.

Entry requirements

You will need one of the following:

  • 2.2 honours degree;
  • equivalent professional or other qualification;
  • two to three years' work experience in a related role;
  • current employment, or access to an organisation upon which to base your assignments;
  • Applicants with non-standard entry requirements and / or significant work experience will be considered on an individual basis.

If English is not your first language you need to show us that your language skills are strong enough for intensive academic study. We usually ask for an IELTS test and we accept some alternative English Language tests.

  • IETLS 6.5 (with a minimum of 5.5 in each skill)
