The Senior Leaders Master’s Degree Apprenticeship (SLMDA), underpinned by the Executive Master in Business Administration (EMBA) degree is an internationally recognised postgraduate management degree and is seen as a passport to a successful senior management career.  Apprentices go on to complete an End Point Assessment after successful completion of the EMBA. Student learning is supported by developmental conversations that support leadership development and enhance application of new learning to management practice. Academic Tutors, Employee Mentors, and Executive Coaches, each focus on different aspects of learning that expose the student to a supportive but challenging reflection on attaining mastery.

What you'll study

At the start of the course, our Executive MBA development programme helps to prepare you for the challenges ahead. It includes intensive academic preparation for those who have been away from university for some years, as well as personal and professional development.

  • Stage One

    Responsible and Sustainable Leadership

    The aim of the module is to allow you to develop the insights, capacities and skills to create and maintain responsible and sustainable business practices through the creation of sustainable mind-sets, the promotion of responsible leadership, and the development of your abilities to influence organisational culture, habits and discourses.

    Managing Operations

    Developing your understanding of the principles and concepts of operations management and how these can be used to support strategic decision making and performance.

    Managing Marketing

    Giving you a heightened understanding of the scope, complexity and issues involved in marketing today, so you can apply theories, make decisions and develop effective marketing responses to organisational challenges.

    Managing People and Organisations

    Drawing on insights from organisational behaviour to develop knowledge, insights, skills and a variety of perspectives relevant to the management of people in organisations.

    Managing Finance

    Teaching you to critically evaluate internal and external financial information and use this to appraise corporate performance and strategy.

  • Stage Two

    The Director’s Perspective

    Focusing on the capabilities needed by company directors, as well as the broader competencies required by the board, to discharge the duties required by regulators and stakeholders.

    Strategic Renewal and Transformation

    Examining the theory, impact and practice of renewal and transformation, so you can help organisations manage rapidly changing environments and remain relevant and competitive.

    Strategic Change and Consultancy

    This module has been designed to give you explicit coverage of the ability to respond to and manage change, as well as providing the second ‘strand’ in strategic management the opportunity to apply this in real situations through the team based consultancy project. It also therefore provides an opportunity for you to take an integrated approach to disciplines covered elsewhere on the programme.

  • Stage Three

    International Consultancy Experience

    This module includes an international study tour and a major international consultancy project aimed at communicating the main theoretical and conceptual ideas identified through recent international and global business research and at developing an understanding of the differences in entrepreneurial activity that exist internationally. This will add valuable experience and international context to your academic studies, enabling you to critically analyse business challenges in organisations around the world.

    Business Research Project

    Equipping you with a theoretical grounding in research methods and their practical application so you can design and conduct research, and devise appropriate, effective recommendations. Rigorously investigating an issue of management or business relevance, typically by bringing together business theory and primary research.

  • Continuous studies

    Personal, Professional and Leadership Development (PPLD)

    This module is taught throughout the course develops professional, strategic transferable skills which students can deploy in the workplace.

    The purpose of the module is to increase students understanding of how to manage their own continuous professional development in order to be a more effective leader and to enable sustained career success.

    Specifically the aims of the module are to:

    • Enable an understanding and appreciation of the importance of effective continuous learning in realising potential.
    • Develop an understanding of key competencies and attributes relating to development as a leader.
    • Develop students’ ability to use reflective practice to improve their performance and continuous development.
    • Enable an understanding of how to identify ongoing development needs for continuous career management.

    The module content can be grouped into three core themes:

    1. Developing core personal and professional competencies
    2. Developing leadership capability
    3. Reflective practice, development planning and career management.

How you’re taught

How will I learn?

The course is delivered in modular blocks of two-three days each. Each teaching period is typically five to six weeks apart. The course also includes workshops to develop professional, strategic and transferable skills

The programme incorporates a mix of classroom modules, independent supported learning and work-based consultancy projects. It includes an international study visit and action learning group meetings.

The EMBA experience is characterised by personalisation, achieved through the delivery of the Personal, Professional and Leadership Development module which will include opportunities for personal diagnostics, mentoring, executive coaching, careers support and individual personal and professional development based around each senior leaders own situation and needs.

You'll also use our virtual learning environment, NOW, which is a flexible web-based system that gives you 24-hour access to module learning materials and reading lists. It allows you to discuss work with tutors and submit coursework electronically from anywhere in the world.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed through a range of assignments, applied projects and presentations and examinations.

It is the application of the knowledge you have acquired during the course that will enable you to think strategically and bring about change within your organisation.

End Point Assessment

The End Point Assessment consists of two distinct assessment methods:

Project showcase

Based on a work-based project, including report, presentation and questioning. The project showcase focuses on apprentices presenting the approach, findings, recommendations and lessons learned from their work-based project. It includes a report, presentation and questioning.

Professional discussion

Based on review of a portfolio. The Professional Discussion takes place between the apprentice and their independent assessor. The independent assessor must prepare areas for discussion following the review of the apprentice’s portfolio and based on the range of knowledge skills and behaviours that the programme is required to deliver.

COVID-19 planning

We will be adopting a range of blended teaching and learning techniques including online and face-to-face (where practical) to ensure that students can meet their learning outcomes in full. We will respond proactively to any national or local policy changes (including lock down) to ensure student safety as our primary concern whilst continuing to focus on offering a comprehensive student academic experience and will work flexibly with our students to ensure they are not disadvantaged by COVID-19.

We'll help you to develop your career potential and support you, as you determine the right career path, develop a job search strategy, reassess your career objectives and identify career options and opportunities.

We offer more hands-on experience than most other UK business school and you'll complete two live consultancy projects.

Entry requirements

You will need the following:

  • 2.1 honours degree or equivalent professional or academic qualifications.
  • GCSE Maths and English (or equivalent)
  • Three years’ work experience in a related role, preferably five.
  • Applicants with non-standard entry qualifications and / or relevant experience will be considered on an individual basis.

Other requirements:

  • Academic and vocational references; and
  • Interview

English language entry requirements

If English is not your first language you need to show us that your language skills are strong enough for intensive academic study. We usually ask for an IELTS test and we accept some alternative English Language tests.

You will need to following to apply for this course:

  • IETLS 6.5 (with a minimum of 5.5 in each skill)
