Our MSc Management and Marketing course gives you a strong understanding of the fundamental issues behind marketing practice. You will explore the marketing planning process, marketing concepts and debates. You will also develop an in-depth understanding of the complexities of the consumer by exploring buyer behaviour.

Building on this, you will examine strategic marketing issues and contemporary practice, taking a holistic view of how organisations respond to an ever-changing global environment. This includes understanding how marketing operates not just in a consumer-facing context, but also in business-to-business and not-for-profit contexts.

You will become equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary to develop and implement innovative, value-adding marketing solutions to help maintain superior customer satisfaction.

You’ll become a well-rounded manager able to operate globally and across a wide variety of business environments. We’ll give you the theoretical insights and practical relevance necessary for a successful graduate career in management.

When you graduate, you'll receive both the Masters degree and a Chartered Management Institute (CMI) Level 7 qualification in Management and Leadership. Our partnership with the CMI means that you'll enjoy complimentary student membership for the duration of your course, and for the first year after graduation.

  • Modules

    Semester One

    Principles of Management (20 credits)

    This module will help you understand contemporary issues, theories and conceptual frameworks used to explain and guide conventional management activities within organisations. More specifically, you will demonstrate an understanding of a range of strategic management concepts that can be utilised to explore and guide effective action in dynamic organisational environments.

    Managing in Organisations (20 credits)

    This module aims to develop an understanding of the human aspects of managing and organising work. Throughout the module you will be encouraged to develop a critical perspective which encompasses views from both those managing and those managed. You will also consider the wider impact of choices taken in regards to managing and organising work activities. Whilst exploring classic studies in managing in organisation, these ideas will also be examined in the context of the contemporary changing international workplace.

    Context of Management (20 credits)

    This module explores how the external environment influences management decision making within organisations, specifically in relation to strategy development.  The module’s aims to develop your understanding of how organisations create strategies to increase competitiveness in a rapidly changing environment. You will develop your analytical abilities and decision making capability needed as future managers and leaders operating in an international environment. On completion of this module you will have a better understanding of the various schools of thought in strategy development and the role of strategic discourse in this process.

    Semester Two

    Principles of Marketing (20 credits)

    This module has been designed to underpinning knowledge associated with the practice of marketing within which you will become familiar with the fundamental issues and concepts relating to the marketing practice.

    The Customer Experience (20 credits)

    This module provides and in-depth understanding of the complexities of the consumer through exploring aspects of consumer buying behaviour. To do this, you will reflect on your own buying behaviour and how it is impacted by people and events around you. Understanding customer behaviour and the drivers of this behaviours are fundamental to the practice of marketing. The module also allows you to develop important reflective skills.

    Strategic Perspectives and the Global Environment (20 credits)

    On this module, you will address strategic marketing issues where you will take a more holistic view of how organisations respond to an ever changing global environment and in doing so will consider contemporary marketing practice. The market context shapes marketing practice and you will also understand how marketing operates in a range of contexts such as B2B and ‘not for Profit’.

    Semester Three

    In your final semester you'll take on a experiential project, giving you a fantastic opportunity to use the theories and knowledge you've gained to produce a challenging, meaningful piece of work. Projects include:

    Consultancy Experience Project (40 credits)

    Working as part of a team, you'll undertake focused research, developing your professional skills, managing a complex project and delivering results in a real business situation. You'll present your findings to the client and learn valuable project management tools and concepts.

    Internship Experience Project (40 credits)

    On an internship of 12 weeks or more, you'll apply the theories you've learnt to a substantial, live project. This will involve focused research, developing skills, managing a complex project and delivering results in a real business situation. You'll also learn project management tools and concepts.

    Business Research Project (40 credits)

    This project is a more traditional piece of independent research, creating an academic research paper, presentation and methodological reflection. Because we believe experiential learning is so important, this project is only available to students with significant prior work experience or a desire to progress to a PhD.

    Global Experience Project (40 credits)

    This exciting project gives you the opportunity of travelling overseas to attend a summer school at one of our partner institutions. You'll produce a piece of academic work drawing on either a concept from the summer school or a case study based on a company local to the host institution.

    Ongoing Learning

    Transformational Leadership Development (10 credits)

    Transformational management education is a key focus within NBS, where effective ethical education across all business and management courses is the foundation of our students’ abilities to understand and contribute in meaningful ways towards current and future challenges in the area of sustainable development. The purpose of the module is to increase understanding of how to manage your own continuous personal and professional development in order to enable sustained career success and to be an effective and transformational leader.

    Research Methods for Managers (10 credits)

    The purpose of the module is for you to acquire the knowledge and skills to be able to formulate, plan and conduct effective research to inform management decisions, through conducting a small-scale research project.

    Placement Diploma in Industrial Experience (2 year course only)

    This module aims to develop your understanding of the business and commercial environment. You will apply relevant prior knowledge and skills in the business environment increasing your commercial awareness. On completion of the module, you will have developed a range of skills and have a practical insight into the world of work and possible career opportunities.

  • Assessment Methods

    A range of assessment methods are used across the course, the choice of which reflects the needs and demands of the different types of module. Some modules will assess the ability to work collaboratively in a team and others will assess individual capability. Types of assessment will range from examinations to group presentations including essays, reports, financial analyses, literature reviews and research based projects.

    The interactive nature of the taught sessions offers opportunities to gain feedback on your performance before being formally assessed and increasing use is made of eLearning to further support the feedback process.

  • Placement Opportunities

    If you are starting your degree in September, you can choose to add a year's work placement, making your Masters a two-year course. It is a great way to put your learning into practice and gain valuable real-world experience to boost your career. If you undertake a placement, you must take up the Business Research Project in Semester three.

    If you are unable to take a full year's placement, but have completed at least 36 weeks, you can qualify for a Placement Diploma in Industrial Experience.

  • Professional Development

    Upon graduation, you will not only receive an MSc Management and Marketing degree, but also a CMI Level 7 qualification in Management and Leadership. Our partnership with the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) means that you’ll enjoy complimentary student membership for the duration of your course and first year after you graduate.

Study and support

Teaching and learning methods are centred around interactive workshops which are highly participative in nature and will employ case studies, discussions, business simulations and group activities.

Interactivity is key to our teaching and we are committed to providing courses that adopt teaching methods that are appropriate to the student cohort and the specific modules.

We ensure that support and guidance is in place, especially during the early stages of the course and assessment periods, to help you become comfortable with operating in a student-centred learning environment.

Induction

All our courses begin with a comprehensive development programme that will help you prepare for your studies and develop key academic and transferable skills. A key feature is a short residential team-building course, normally in the Peak District.

You will also have opportunities to meet members of the teaching team and other postgraduate students, receive detailed programme information, and gain valuable support and guidance from the library, careers service, international office and Student Support Services.

In-sessional English language support

In-sessional English language support classes are available to all international (non-EU) students studying on degree courses at NTU. There is no extra charge for these classes.

Learn a new language

Alongside your study you also have the opportunity to learn a new language. The University Language Programme (ULP) is available to all students and gives you the option of learning a totally new language or improving the skills you already have.

You’ll complete a hands-on project – a fantastic opportunity to use what you’ve learned to produce a meaningful piece of work. Projects include the Consultancy Experience Project, the Internship Experience Project, the Business Research Project, and the Global Experience Project.

English language entry requirements

If English is not your first language you need to show us that your language skills are strong enough for intensive academic study. We usually ask for an IELTS test and we accept some alternative English language tests.

  • For 1-year Masters you'll need a 6.5 grade overall with minimum of 5.5 in each component.
  • For 2-year Masters you'll need a 6.5 grade overall with a minimum of 6.0 in speaking and listening, and 5.5 in reading and writing.
