This course is designed for those who have been offered a place on a PGCE or School Direct course but wish to enhance their current subject knowledge in Computer Science.
This is a full-time Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) course for graduates who have been offered a place on a PGCE or School Direct course, but wish to enhance their current subject knowledge in Computing Science. It runs for 200 hours over an eight week period.
The aim is to provide the breadth and depth of knowledge and understanding that you need to teach secondary Computer Science confidently and competently. The course is well-established and there are many successful teachers of Computer Science in our region who began their training by completing it.
This SKE course is fully funded by the Department for Education and you will receive a tax free bursary of up to £200 per week for the duration of the course (subject to confirmation by DfE).
What you'll study
The course is designed to develop the subject knowledge you require to teach Computer Science in secondary schools at Key Stages 3, 4 and 5. The focus is on:
- knowledge of computer Science techniques and their applications
- an understanding of the logical principles and relationships within Computer Science
- an awareness of the nature of teaching and learning secondary Computer Science
- communication skills
Careers and employability
This course is designed for graduates with a degree in a subject other than Computer Science, who wish to train as secondary Computer Science and ICT teachers. You must already hold an offer of a place on either a School Direct or PGCE course to be accepted on a SKE course.
Trainees that continue and successfully complete either a PGCE or School Direct course which leads to a recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) are ideally placed to pursue a career as a teacher in a secondary school or college.
This course does not offer placements.
- Confirmation (by your school or course provider) that you have been accepted onto an Initial Teacher Training (ITT) course, such as PGCE or School Direct.
By being interviewed, offered a place and accepting that place on an ITT course, you are deemed to have met the entry requirements for this Subject Knowledge Enhancement course.
How to apply
If a school or ITT provider decides that you would be suitable for secondary Computer Science and ICT teaching, but that you need to develop your computing subject knowledge, they can offer you a place on their School Direct or PGCE course. However, this offer is made on condition that you successfully complete the SKE course prior to starting the ITT course.
There are then two possibilities:
- Your school or ITT provider contacts us and, provided there are vacancies, refers you to this course, or
- You contact us directly. In this case we will confirm with your school or provider that they have offered, and you have accepted, an ITT place.
