What do you enjoy most about your course at NTU?
"I love that we are always encouraged to think differently and to take a creative approach to our projects in order to establish our own personal design identity. The combination of experimentation and technical learning time is also great."
What do you think about the course staff?
"The tutors want you to be independent and make your own decisions regarding your projects, however they are always available to provide guidance and encourage you to discuss work and ideas with others via weekly seminar groups. The scheduled one-to-one time is great for discussing any challenges you be are having and setting goals and objectives."
Has the course included any trips?
"In my second year I had the opportunity to visit Berlin to see first-hand how dramatically the city has changed over the last 100 years. It had a huge variation of architectural styles, from 1960s graffiti clad apartment blocks to the classical Brandenburg Gate. The city had a lot of personality."
Can you tell us a little bit about the placement you undertook?
"I secured a placement with Workplace Creations after the position was advertised by the university. The employability team were very supportive in helping me through the application and interview process.
I had the opportunity to assist their design team with a range of different projects, including site surveys, space planning, and interior design schemes. I also worked with industry specialists and suppliers to select furniture, finishes and joinery pieces. As my placement progressed I even had the opportunity to work on some small projects on my own.
Gaining experience in a real work environment has been incredibly valuable. It’s definitely given me an advantage over those who have not completed a placement. I’ve improved my confidence and added lots of new skills to my CV.
The best part of the whole experience has been communicating with real clients and suppliers, working on real projects and subsequently seeing my work come to fruition."
