More about Alfie

Placement company: VolkerFitzpatrick Ltd

What does your placement role involve?

“My placement has been with VolkerFitzpatrick Ltd where I’m working on the LAMDA project located in West London (Hammersmith). I have been carrying out several different tasks throughout my placement year such as; procurement, carrying out contracts, re-measures, cost management and managing subcontractors. All of these experiences have been great and have helped to prepare me for a successful career within the industry. The company also supplied training throughout my placement which is huge benefit to once again developing your skill set within the industry.

“I’ve been very fortunate to be placed on a great site which is evolving on a daily basis. The most interesting part of my placement has been dealing with subcontractors on a first hand basis and making decisions which can have a massive effect on the project being delivered both on time and for the targeted profit margins.”

This helps to constantly keep you developing different skill sets and making you more aware of different elements of the construction industry.

“The course staff are great if you require any extra help they are always more than willing to support you in order to further your development throughout the course. They all have a wealth of experience which they’re willing to share with you, assisting us from the transition from classroom to the industry in real life. My tutors and lecturers have also gone the extra mile to help me find a way to manage my time due to having heavy sporting commitments. All my lecturers and tutors have been great at helping me mould a timetable to make sure I achieved the top of my ability.
