“I would recommend the BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering course at NTU because of the high standard of teaching and facilities and because of the opportunity to undertake a year in industry. These are both extremely valuable to your learning and employability. I enjoyed the variety of different modules, both practical and technical on my course. It was great to get a broad understanding of the subject, which provided a taster of the different career paths within Civil Engineering.
What did you find most valuable about your course at NTU?
“We had many guest speakers throughout the three year course and one almost every week in final year. It was beneficial to learn about industry professionals’ experiences, and about current practice in industry. I particularly enjoyed the guest speakers from the Institute of Civil Engineers (ICE). It was interesting to hear about their route to chartership, and how they have applied the skills they gained from their degree in industry.
“The technical staff were also especially helpful when I was conducting experiments in the labs for my dissertation research. My tutor was also very supportive during my dissertation, always willing to meet me to discuss my ideas and give me feedback on my progress.
How did you spend your placement year?
“I completed my year out on placement as a Site Engineer for the contractors Jackson Civil Engineering. During this year I worked on four different sites across the south of England and developed my setting out skills and knowledge of general construction principles. For me the most interesting aspect was learning about the works which were taking place and understanding the activity schedules of the construction.
“I also undertook a summer placement as a Cost Consultant for Arcadis, working within the Rail team on a rail depot in Doncaster. My role was to help assess the works which had taken place on site each month, and review how much the client should owe.
“My advice would be to gain as much work experience as you can. All the skills I gained from both placements have helped me since I’ve graduated, especially my general construction knowledge which can be applied to any project.”
