More about Caitlin
"I chose BSc (Hons) Civil Engineering because it's all about problem solving using maths and science. I decided to come to NTU as it has an excellent reputation for Civil Engineering and the opportunity to go on a year-long placement was really important for me.
"The facilities here are excellent, from the surveying equipment available to the different laboratories and structural testing area. It's a really hands-on course and having modern facilities available makes it a lot easier. The academics and support staff are also really helpful, making time for you if you have any questions.
What have been the highlights of your course?
"The highlight of the course has definitely been the week residential field trip. I learnt so much in that week that is great experience and applicable skills when I go into my placement and graduate. We started at 7.30 am each morning and didn't finish till around midnight – it was exhausting but it gave us enough time in a practical setting to do everything extensively.
"I really enjoy the practical nature of the course especially the seminars, where we get the chance to practice what we've been taught. The hands-on nature of the course comes across really well in these.
How are you spending your placement year?
"I've just secured a placement next year at Bam Nuttall, working in contracting. I heard about the opportunity through the placement office, who have been incredibly helpful throughout the whole process. They email job opportunities, helped me with my CV and covering letter and gave me interview advice. I'm hoping that if I do well on my placement, there will be an opportunity to be sponsored in my final year and secure a graduate job with Bam Nuttall.
Would you recommend your course at NTU?
"I would really recommend the BSc (Hons) Civil Engineering course. We share modules with the BEng (Hons) students, but we have separate modules helping specifically with maths and structures. These modules ensure you're completely up-to-speed on the subject and give you all the background information you need for working on a project."
