Placement company: Royal Household, Windsor Castle
"I chose to study this course at NTU as I believe it offers a thorough grounding in all aspects of Building Surveying. I have a passion for the preservation of historic buildings that reflect our great industrial and manufacturing past. It is my hope that on graduation, my degree plus the placement experience will equip me with the diverse skills necessary to secure employment in conservation.

"I primarily project manage works within the Royal Mews and Royal Gardens but also assist in reactive maintenance issues within all areas of Windsor Castle and the Home Park Estate. My projects have ranged from from restoring the historic fabric of Victorian stables to the re-glazing of relatively new glasshouses to installing a debris boom on the River Thames. I involve myself with anything of interest to improve my construction knowledge and understand the time and work involved.
"The projects require an involvement with various bodies; from external consultants, English Heritage, Local Planning Authority to internal departments such as Health and Safety. As well as gaining technical knowledge, this placement has opened my eyes to the interpersonal and communication skills expected of a good surveyor. In reality, a successful project requires working in partnership with other professionals and all interested parties and I would not have gained this insight without having a placement.
"This placement has confirmed to me that I have chosen the right degree and by talking with other surveyors I have realised the range of opportunities available to me. Although my aim is to predominantly work in conservation I am happy to apply for a wide range of jobs as I want to gain a broad general knowledge of the industry and modern building techniques."
