How did you find studying at NTU?
“I absolutely loved studying at NTU, I really enjoyed the City Campus and new facilities that had just opened in my first year of Uni. We had great laboratory facilities which some modules requires, plenty of computers, meeting rooms and printers which increased as the years went on.
"I feel I was able to approach all academics within the built environment office. They were all very helpful if I was confused on coursework and replied quickly to emails and all correspondence.
Would you recommend NTU and your course?
“I would definitely recommend my course, it’s really enjoyable, especially if you have an interest in construction. It’s also a professional course with chances to become a member of the RICS. There are currently hundreds of jobs out there as well!
“It’s a degree that secures you a career in an industry which always requires buildings, roads and rail so you will never be out of a job. There are opportunities to work all over the world and professional bodies within the industry. The salary is good too.
How did you attain the role you are currently working in?
“I worked for Carillion PLC one day a week during my first and part of my second year of university while still in my full time degree. This was set up through an interview process with NTU when I started university. Through making this connection with Carillion I was able to go back to them once completing my degree.
The recruitment fairs on-campus were really helpful in understanding what companies were after and finding out about the vast amount of companies around and what their specialities were. The InPlace system at NTU allowed me to look up and apply for companies during my placement year.
What are your favourite aspects of your current role?
“The greatest aspects of my role now are that I am on the largest development in the City of London which is very exciting. I feel I have fitted very well into the role of Assistant Quantity Surveyor for my project and have taken on packages including, decoration, brick/blockwork, screeding and metal decking. The greatest challenge was being the sole commercial point of call for my phase for a two week period while my manager was on holiday. This threw me in the deep end which I found exciting giving me a large amount of responsibility after only being at the company for three months!”
