More about Harry
Placement company: Arcadis (formerly EC Harris)
“The course is supported by the RICS which is something employers look for. NTU is known to be one of the UK’s leading universities for construction related degrees. The library resources are brilliant and cover all aspects of the course from construction materials, tendering and procurement processes, to construction contracts and dispute resolution.
What was your experience of the course staff?
“The staff at NTU provide a good learning experience partly through lectures, but the most admirable lecturers deliver insightful seminars and are approachable – this is the key to a brilliant learning experience. I have been particularly impressed with those lecturers at NTU who have shown to be easy to talk to and keen to aid student learning. These lecturers are Anthony Ward, Andrew King, Richard Wood, Mohd Sani Mohd Emran, Emmanuel Manu.
How did you spend your placement year?
“I undertook my placement year at Arcadis (formerly EC Harris) in Kings Cross, London. They treated me as an employee and not a placement student, I was trusted with work way above the remit of someone on placement. I began measuring and producing cost plans and estimates, but I soon found myself in the deep end, involved in mid-tender interviews with our Client and potential Contractors bidding for the works, as well as reviewing their commercial and technical bids, and producing tender recommendation reports for the Client with the aid of my direct supervisor – all very interesting stuff!
What was the most interesting aspect of this placement?
“The benefits of my placement year are many and varied. The stand-out aspects were: working on some of the largest projects in London (arguably one of the world’s most advanced construction cities in the world), working closely with senior partners in the business, being entrusted with important work - tender recommendation reports/critical project estimates/amending JCT contracts to capture Client needs etc. Finally, the recognition from my supervisor and senior members of staff for producing good work.
What skills have you gained by completing this placement?
“I have gained a greater depth of knowledge of how the construction industry works in practice. My communication skills have advanced through close interaction with clients and other senior members of internal and external professionals. My professional network has grown; I would be confident approaching individuals I worked with on projects for help in the future. My placement year also counts as the first year of my RICS APC accreditation, which Arcadis are supporting me through.
“Networking and being approachable are the most important aspects in life, having ‘people skills’ are invaluable for any job. The ability to demonstrate this, alongside experience working for an industry leading company on the largest projects in the UK is a recipe for success.”
