What have you found most valuable on your course at NTU?
“Having lecturers and tutors who are still in industry is really valued, providing us with a current outlook that isn’t outdated and actually relevant to the design world now. The administrators are always lovely when you swing by the office and really easy to get hold of should you need to.
What have you enjoyed most about studying?
“Doing a sandwich course was the best decision I made, not a lot of courses out there offer this but it is a truly instrumental part of the course. Compared to a number of courses at the university, our course takes up a lot more hours in the week. You build and develop friendships with course friends who have similar passions to you which makes being at university a lot more of an enjoyable experience.
“My favourite course trip was definitely to Barcelona. Visiting the Barcelona Pavilion by Mies van der Rohe, which we had learnt about in our lectures, was amazing! The Barcelona trip allowed us to see a lot of Gaudi work among other great architects, as well as a couple of nights out in the sun with the whole course which we enjoyable.
How did you spend your placement year?
“For my placement year I worked at FITCH, a global retail and brand consultancy. I was a member of the 3D design team and got to assist the designers on some really big and exciting projects for a lot of well-known brands.
“It’s hard to put into words how much I have learnt on placement. All of the designers are so willing to help and nurture you, a handful of whom went to Nottingham Trent themselves! FITCH have really given me confidence in designing, sketching which before my placement was something that I was competent in doing I would now describe as one of my strongest skills. I have used new software such as Vectorworks and Cinema 4D which I will continue to use.
"FITCH has also prepared me for the real design world, I now know about materials and have contacts which is something that I never had before my placement. Placement year builds on your confidence and allows you to speak to people who were once at the same stage as you, finding out their career paths and the different approaches is invaluable. I treasure my placement year at FITCH and would recommend anyone considering it to definitely go for it!”
