More about Matthew

Placement company: Walker Sime (Manchester)

Have you been involved in any live projects or briefs on your course?

“We’ve been involved in two live projects, working with Nottingham Arts Theatre in our second year and Nottingham Castle in our final year. Personally, my favourite was the Nottingham Arts Theatre, our group was briefed to carry out various surveys including a measured survey and revitalise the building in order to attract more interest. Likewise, we were also looking to improve the buildings accessibility for ambulant users using Part M of the Building Regulations and we would finally present our proposals to the Client. Our proposals comprised of 3D CGI’s (Computer Generated Images), CAD drawings using our measured surveys, Design Portfolio, survey reports and all our primary and secondary research.

Has your course included any trips?

“In our second year we were taken to Malta as part of our Employability and Commercial Awareness module. The overall objective of the module was to gain an understanding of the techniques and skills required to obtain employment for both placement year and graduate jobs besides also understanding the principles of employment law, Health and Safety at Work regulations and related procedures.

“Malta was a fantastic international field trip which enabled us to develop an appreciation of property as a globalised industry. We compared contemporary issues such as health and safety, building structures, specifications and relevant regulations. After analysing these issues, we then delivered professional presentations on the last day of the trip as part of our assessment.

How did you spend your placement year?

“I undertook my placement year as a Trainee Project Manager at a multi-disciplinary consultancy in Manchester called Walker Sime. My placement year has given me invaluable experience and has developed my knowledge greatly in the construction industry. My aim for the year was to experience a project from inception to completion and gain a general understanding of the construction industry and I managed to surpass this being involved with multiple projects and undertaking various roles.

“Majorly working on my own accord, my role involved assisting in a variety of projects in the Public, Commercial and Leisure sectors, working through RIBA Stages 0-7 producing tools and procedure documentation such as project programmes, risk registers, stage plan of works and more. Furthermore, my role involved managing the tendering process, contract administration and liaising with the project team.

How will your placement enhance your employability?

“My work experience has given me invaluable practical lessons for my future career. Working for Walker Sime and getting heavily involved with various projects, in a variety of sectors and carrying out different disciplines has enabled me to gain a greater understanding and knowledge of the industry and moreover, greater confidence in myself thus making me adaptable and more employable.”
