What do you enjoy most about your course at NTU?

“I’ve always wanted a career in construction due to my upbringing and involvement of family members that are in the industry. After reading up on building surveying on the NTU website the course seemed very diverse in terms of what you learn and also career prospects. I attended an open day and I was sold; I loved the city and the atmosphere around the University.

Have you been involved in any live projects whilst at NTU?

“As part of a Building Design module in Year Two, we worked on a conservation project at Nottingham Castle which included refurbishment of a Victorian bandstand. This was enjoyable as it was a practical exercise where we were out on site on a weekly basis. It was a Grade 2 listed building so there was a lot we had to research and get our heads round before putting together refurbishment proposals.

What advice would you give to prospective students considering applying for your course?

“If you’re interested in construction and want a practical job that is hands-on and differs from day-to-day then go for it. My placement year has taught me that I’ve made the right choice; I’m always out and about visiting new cities, assisting on a variety of work from pre-acquisition surveys, development monitoring, to contract admin; the list goes on.

How are you spending your placement year?

“I’m working for Paragon, a building and project consultancy with in-house building surveying, quantity surveying, environmental and project teams. Being part of the building surveying team means I’m usually out on surveys, running refurbishment projects or assisting on development monitoring which involves liaising between developers and the funder.

“My placement has been great, I've been given the opportunity to assist on a variety of work which always keeps it interesting. I’ve enjoyed every moment of it and as time goes on I have been given more and more responsibility which is great for my learning process. Undertaking this placement was definitely the right choice for me, it means I’m now positive this is the route I want to take and I can’t wait to progress with my career once I’ve graduated.

What skills have you gained completing this placement?

“I’ve gained vast knowledge and experience of surveying commercial buildings and commercial defects which I can now apply on a day-to-day basis. The standard of work I produce has improved too, as there is no room for error in our field of work.

“I’ve worked on some big and interesting projects which I’ll always be able to refer back to for reference. I believe the knowledge and experience I’ve gained on placement will stand me well for when I graduate and continue my APC process in order to progress to a chartered level.”
