Placement company: Jackson Civil Engineering
What are the best things about your course at NTU?
“I am grateful for the fact that we have a great team of lecturers who were industry professionals themselves, who share their knowledge with us. Being taught by these professionals has given me knowledge and confidence which I have utilised during my placement year. All the staff are friendly, very approachable and are always willing to help out when in need.
“NTU has great ties with many prestigious employers in the country and we have been lucky to go on site visits with the likes of VolkerFitzpatrick who, at the time, were constructing a distribution centre for a major supermarket. We have also been on a local site visit in Nottingham at the Victoria Centre, Laing O'Rourke responsible for the refurbishment works.
How did you spend your placement year?
“During my placement year at Jackson I have been very lucky to have contributed to 15 commercial projects, values of which ranging from £20k up to £1.5million. Once you gain the confidence of your employer, the more responsibilities you tend to be given.
“Because the projects are small to medium size, you are not stuck on one job for long. This means that you have more exposure to various contracts, different clients etc. This makes you more versatile as an individual.
How did your course prepare you for your placement work?
Good time management and organisation, which you develop during your time at NTU, is also key within the industry. “Working with figures mathematics is also key, and knowledge of contracts (e.g. NEC, JCT) are also very important.
“You grow in confidence as you learn and gain more knowledge. Quantity Surveyor is a professional role which requires having professional etiquette, having the right ethics, ability to provide a professional advice/service which is all developed through experience.”
