More about Sophie
“The incredible facilities that NTU have to offer made it very appealing to study here. The workshops and studio space that NTU have are fantastic.
"Make sure your portfolio shows a bit of you, during your interview. NTU just want to get an idea of who you are and how you design, so show as many of your different skills as possible but most importantly make sure a bit of your personality is in there.
What have you enjoyed most about your course?
“During my first year we completed a brief for an external design competition. The brief involved looking at a current market of existing promotional products and we had to design an alternative. My final idea got shortlisted and entered into the nationwide design contest.
“Throughout the year we had a variety of different tutors who also run their own businesses. One of the live briefs they set was all about designing for specific target markets and trying to understand the amount of research that we needed to put in to find out exactly how to design for a particular type of person.
“We have had lectures from various different tutors and experts from industry. One of my favourites was from Grant Baker who is currently a tutor at NTU but also runs his own business. He spoke about setting up his own business and the positives and negatives of it, which gave us loads of great information on business and how to start our own.
How do you find the support on offer?
“Everyone at NTU is always willing to help, the technicians in the workshop are always eager to help out with projects in whatever way they can and give loads of great advice on model making. Our tutors are great because they help us to achieve our full potential by giving us challenging briefs and being critical about our work and design solutions.
