Placement company: Plum Products

What have you enjoyed most about your course?

“Studying BA (Hons) Product Design at Nottingham Trent University is great fun. You will be given the opportunity to explore your own interests within the boundaries of the given briefs. You learn an eclectic group of skills, including sketching, CAD, modelling, branding and marketing.

“All the tutors are great, they will always answer any questions you have. Our main administrator is well known to the students and always willing to try and find out information or help you with anything you need. The staff in the workshop all understand that many people need a lot of support in the workshop due to us being designers not manufacturers. They explain things in a simple way but are never patronising and will help you to make your models and show you how to use the machines so you feel safe using them.

Where did you spend your placement year?

“I did a work placement at Plum Products in Lincoln. Plum is a toy company which designs and sells everything from climbing frames and trampolines to dolls houses and toy rockets. Due to Plum only having about 30 staff in the office I was able to get a great understanding of all aspects of the business. As the only designer I was always busy and never just making the tea.

“I learnt about how design can affect marketing, sales and customer service. As well as getting to use all the skills I had learnt in my first two years at NTU, I also came back into my final year with better knowledge of the whole process of a product from research and designs to manufacture and transportation making my final year designs much more realistic."
