More about James
"I wanted a course that had practical elements as well as theory so I could develop my skills in the many aspects of filming such as camera work, editing and animating. The Media course at NTU definitely has those elements. I was able to try a lot of different things from script writing to lifestyles and consumer culture.
"I gained a massive amount of work experience while on the course. In my third year I worked at the videogames festival, GameCity, editing photos and videos and making a promotional film for my dissertation. This film is to be used by GameCity as part of a future lecture to encourage volunteers to get involved in the festival - definitely one of my greatest achievements on the course!
"I also gained experience as a runner at Gems TV working on the production floor with live cameras – I even got to appear on TV with the presenters! As well as this, I got a placement on the BBC mini-series, Truckers, where I was able to get a first-hand look at the different elements involved in making this sort of program. My role involved supporting background artists as well as assisting the location manager and props team on set, learning what is involved in their jobs, which was great fun! It gave me a taste of the industry as well as the opportunity to talk to people from different departments who have years of experience.
"The careers advisers at NTU were a great help - they kept me up-to-date with jobs and work opportunities in my chosen categories.
"As a result of doing this degree, I've gained a clearer idea of my career plans. I feel I've gained confidence to try new things and be outgoing. I'm looking to pursue a career in media production specifically film and television."
