More about Lauren

Why did you decide to do postgraduate study?

“I decided to complete a postgraduate degree as it was the next step towards a PHD, but also, I felt that it would help me standout against other History graduates.”

What made you choose NTU?

“I chose NTU as I loved my time here at undergraduate level; the tutors on BA (Hons) History were always supportive and willing to help out. The MA History course at NTU was by far the most unique amongst all the Universities I looked at.”

What do you enjoy most about your course at NTU?

“The aspect of the course that I enjoy the most is the diversity in lecturers’ specialism. Each weekly lecture focuses on a different form of studying the past; this has kept the course interesting and allowed us to explore a number of specialisms.”

What do you think about the course staff? How do they support your learning and University experience?

“The staff at NTU are amazing and really accommodating. If you are willing to put yourself out there, the lectures are more than willing to help you in return. The course staff have really helped my University experience, especially when I have faced personal and educational difficulty.”

What do you think about the facilities available to you?

“The resources available in the library have really improved since I started at NTU in 2014. The library have worked really hard to make as many books and articles as possible accessible online. They have also improved their Inter Library Loan service, so there is not a limit on the items you can request, which is very helpful when it comes to research for the Dissertation.”

Why would you recommend your course to someone looking to study in that area?

“The MA History course offers a more theory-based approach towards studying the past, which is not something most universities offer. It improves your knowledge and upstanding of key historical thinking via different specialisms.”

How do you think the course, and having a postgraduate qualification, will help you to progress your career?

“If I am successful with my application in the next academic year, I will be starting a PhD in September 2019. This would not be do able without the knowledge gained from the MA History course; therefore, this course is incredibly helpful in the progress of my career goals.”

What has been your greatest achievement at NTU so far?

“My greatest achievement this academic year was probably getting my scholarship for the Masters course.”

How does studying MA History differ from your undergraduate studies?

“The MA History is based a lot more within theory, especially when compared to my undergraduate studies. The MA also involves more independent studying, as there is less contact time. Therefore, you have to be a lot more proactive in postgraduate studies.”
