More about Muftah

What route did you take into postgraduate study?
I completed my bachelor’s degree in Accounting at the National Institute of Administration in Libya. I then decided to study my Masters Degree at NBS in MSc Finance and Accounting.

In addition to my studies I also have experience working as an accountant for Libya Airlines.

When choosing a master’s degree, what did you consider it important to have?
The most important factor was getting experience and enhancing my knowledge in a different cultural environment. NBS is known for its diverse student population and this is exactly what I encountered.

What were your reasons for studying a master’s degree and why did you choose Nottingham Business School?
Nottingham Business School is known as a perfect place to study business because of its ranking and accreditation.

The main reason for me to choose MSc Finance and Accounting was to have in-depth knowledge of global financial policies whilst living and studying in a different country and global financial centre. I also chose NBS because of its AASCB accreditation.

Why did you choose to study Finance and Accounting. What did you enjoy about it?
I really enjoyed the Corporate Finance and Accounting module. I got in-depth knowledge about global financial policy, financial structure and the benefit of boards in governance models. This module also increased my understanding of financial ratios.

In addition to this, NBS have also helped me greatly in personal development by providing several lectures on self-improvement and skills enhancement.

Describe what your seminars like?
I have had extensive practical knowledge by working with the real businesses and providing them solutions which related to the concepts that we were learning.

The concept of practical experience accompanied with the case studies, debates and interactions in seminars made me think differently and to constantly relate what I was learning to the global financial markets.

The tutors were very approachable and they played a vital role in improving my English. I can now write, read and carry a long conversation without hesitation. I must say I am very grateful to them.

How has the master’s degree differed from your undergraduate experience?
My undergraduate studies mainly comprised of theories concepts and modules, whereas my Masters consisted of working with real business, case studies and frequently working in diverse teams.

What are the key skills you have developed studying at NBS?
Working in multicultural teams helped me greatly to develop my soft skills. I was a representative during Global Week, which enhanced my leadership and adaptability when working with different cultures.

In addition, I learned to communicate clear and concise information with my team and developed crucial transferable and critical thinking skills.

Do you feel that your overall experience in the programme will make your profile more competitive in the job market?
Yes, NBS has boosted my confidence and research skills to consult with any business across the globe regarding their financial standing.

The Consultancy Project is the most valuable module provided by NBS. Here, I had to work in a team to provide financial ratios to a business and recommended to them the precautions they must take when the company is in financial crises. This gave me greater insight of what the real issues are facing businesses.

My skills accompanied with my knowledge have made me independent and adjustable to work, not only domestically, but also globally.

Have you benefited from the services provided by the Employability Team?
There are numerous recruitment fairs and events available on CV building and interview processes made available by the Employability team. They are always available to provide help related to the job applications, CV building, placement assessments days and so on.

How have you found moving to and living in Nottingham?
I actually enjoyed the experience of living in Nottingham. Everything is available within walking distance. It’s easy and convenient to live in Nottingham and also cost effective.

I have been in the UK for a year and it was my dream to study here. I can feel the change in my mind-set, personality which has made me independent and outgoing and able to deal situations using different perspectives.

What advice would you give someone who is thinking about applying for the programme?
I would advise them to make the maximum use of the events and the courses available at NBS as there are a lot of opportunities available to develop yourself during your studies.

NBS provides so many courses, events and lectures which also helps to develop additional business knowledge. The Hive, Thinkabutor challenge, Accler8 event and so on which allow you to confidently transition into the job market.

What are your short term and long term career plans?
My master’s provided me with strong experience in a variety of projects and presentations, especially the research I conducted during my Consultancy Project. I am planning to do my PhD at Nottingham Business School as I have experienced the quality of services they provide to their students.
