More about Amanda
"My host school (The Minster School, Southwell) is an 'outstanding' school with high expectations in out of the classroom. Being partnered with NTU has secured me in knowing I would complete the course to a very high standard, having worked alongside talented teachers and practitioners.
"My NTU teacher training coordinator has been to observe me twice this year and has given me endless feedback on my progress which has proved extremely useful when getting me through the course. An understanding that the teaching staff were once in our position unpins their helpful and constantly reassuring nature. I also attended sessions after school to learn about the wider context of the school such as SEND, healthy and safety, and behaviour.
"I come to the University every Monday for the day to take part in lectures, seminars and to share ideas with other trainees. This is where the foundations of your pedagogy are laid. I also log into NOW, NTU's online workspace, every day. Without this facility I would not have had such close contact with my tutors, even when at school. I also use it to check emails, use the resources on the Learning Rooms and submit assignments / access feedback.
"My tips for someone on the School Direct course? Every day is a new day so smile loads and throw yourself in there. Always make sure you are prepared, organised and have had a good night’s sleep. Drink plenty of water and eat breakfast! If you have a full day begin and end every lesson positively and take the opportunity to get to know the kids.
"Work-based training has definitely been the more informative route into teaching for me. I have learnt how to become part of a team and work towards a shared goal in the department.
"NTU is a great place to be. What you put into it, you will get out of it, so go for it!"
