More about Nicola Jane
"In order to get onto the course I did a BTEC National in Social Care two years after I left school and then a few years later an NNEB qualification in Nursery Nursing, before working for 12 years in a special school.
"What particularly appealed to me about the course is the fact that I could choose strands that compliment my existing experiences, as well as the fact that there is no final exam!
"What I really value about studying here is that as a mature student I am able to do this course in the first place. I have two young children and sometimes it can be tough to juggle study with family life, however, I am not the only mature student on the course which has helped me tremendously.
"I have learned some valuable skills and been able to build on my existing knowledge working with young children. I have also had the opportunity to work with some fabulous teachers and have learned a great deal from them. I took part in a three week placement through the Student Associate Scheme run by NTU which has continued into paid employment at the school.
"In the future I hope to become a Primary Teaching SENCO. I definitely still want to be a teacher but I have decided to work with Key Stage Two instead of Key Stage One. I thought I wouldn't be able to do it with family commitments and the fact that it was a long time since I had done any studying but at 37 years old and just going to university, I am living proof that it is possible."
