What were you doing before coming to university and what made you choose NTU?

"Before starting my postgraduate studies, I completed a BSc degree and worked for two years as a geologist in Malawi. I undertook postgraduate study at Nottingham Law School (NLS) because I wanted to gain specialist knowledge on oil, gas and mining law. I had heard NLS was one of the leading law schools in the UK, with an outstanding and established international reputation for excellence in legal education.

"When choosing a university, scholarship opportunities were important to me because without financial support I would have found it difficult to fund my studies. It was my greatest achievement to have been awarded NTU’s Brenda Howe Africa Scholarship which covered the total cost of my tuition."

Tell us about your course

"The curriculum of my chosen LLM programme covered a blend of legal and regulatory frameworks which underpin the oil, gas and mining industry. I believe the knowledge I have gained will equip me with relevant legal expertise on the environmental and investment aspects of the extractive industry. I have found the English-support classes that NTU provide for international students, library workshops and seminar-based teaching very supportive as they have helped me cope with the differences between the Malawian and UK education systems, and have been particularly beneficial to my learning."

What are you doing now you have finished your studies?

"Since my return to Malawi, the oil and gas secretariat, under the Ministry of Natural Resources, Energy & Mining recruited me as an Oil and Gas Officer. I handle the policy, technical and legal issues in the oil and gas sector in Malawi. The industry is at its infancy stage in Malawi so I am involved with; developing petroleum policy, revising various outdated petroleum legislation, development of a model production sharing agreement and renegotiating production sharing agreements signed between Malawi government and various oil companies."

How did NTU help you secure your graduate role?

"My role in undertaking the aforementioned activities is a direct result of the seminars and lectures that I took at Nottingham Law School. The core modules of International Oil, Gas and Mining Investment and Environmental Laws I and II respectively, gave me insight and a platform to understand and analyse complex oil and gas issues. I am deeply indebted to Prof David Ong and external lecturer Mr Anozie Awambu. I can confidently say, these two brilliant minds shaped my writing skills and helped me to develop critical thinking and analytical skills which I am now applying to my current job in the oil and gas sector."
